About Me
Who would have thought that the quiet, low key, tom-boyish girl with one friend would blossom into a hard working, outspoken, talented, strong and academically and lyrically creative young woman? The 80's brought so many good things to remember like; transformer toys, Zelda Nintendo, the Fraggle Rock cartoon and hit singers Madonna and Michael Jackson. That time period was so much different than the world we live in now. Well... one other thing hard to let go of, brought by the 80's was that quiet, tom-boyish girl named Renee who would one day use her voice to accomplish every one of her goals in life.
Born and raised in South Philadelphia, Renee took off and flew straight threw the education system taking advantage of everything academics had to offer her grabbing two college degrees before landing. Although school was always most important to her, MUSIC was the first thing on her mind getting up for class every morning. Growing up, she listened to her parents play oldies and would memorize the words to all of her favorite old school hits and sing them as if she was that artist at the time. Renee especially followed legendaries like Pattie Labell, Aretha Franklin, Chaka khan and Tina Marie. However, when she hit her late teen age years, it was natural for her admire groups like 702, Allure, and SWV. Arriving at young adulthood she clung to female vocalists like Faith Evans, Tony Braxton, and Floetry, which all exuded deep rich tones of voices like her.
Coming from a family background of music and art, she understood at an early age what it meant to know and love your craft. To know Music is to love music and love what you do. Her passion and desire burns for writing lyrics, listening to creative beats, strategically arranging vocals to make beautiful music. Given the poetic roots passed down from her grandmother who was a poet, naturally Renee began writing in grade school leading up to middle school, and throughout high school. After writing poetry for so many years, she has the ability to express herself using words that have movement and hidden meanings. She has published many pieces of her work with the International Library of Poetry and has won several awards commemorating her poetic achievements. Although she began singing and writing songs at the tender age of eight, it wouldn't be until the age of fifteen that she would join a group of girls who also sang, and set aside her goal of becoming a solo artist. Renee was scouted by a singing group who were in search of another female member. They wanted someone with a little attitude and fire mixed with voice...that was Renee. She took the stage at a local talent showcase in downtown Philadelphia where she sang a song that she wrote called "so amazing" and took home the first prize winnings. From there, she was recruited immediately and was asked to incorporate her hypnotic deep tones with other angelic female voices that would later win many competitions in Philadelphia. During this time, she found the criticism of her childhood weight from music industry representatives was not constructive sought out a different path with her career. Years as a member of a singing group would soon be set to rest while Renee branched off to begin her solo career.
Today, she is Solo and pursuing her life long deferred goal of being a professional Music Recording Artist, song writer and entertainer. Recent auditions she has attended includes; Temple University Film auditions for a singing role in a small film, along with American Idol: Season 7. She has performed at the Village Underground in New York along with World Café Live’s open mic night. Currently a song writer at STUDIO 609 and works with one of the top producers in Philly "STEVE McKie Beats" (Who produced Jill Scott's "HATE ON ME") and have gotten the attention of husband and wife Duo group "KINDRED THE FAMILY SOUL". Renee’s affiliations include ASCAP, Poetry In Motion, Black Lilly, and ONE Organization. Besides all of that, she is a warm, funny, and a kind hearted person who loves to make people happy and bring joy to those through her voice. Renee Russell is soon to be a name spoken often in the city of Philadelphia!!!!!!Renee Russell Fan Club Coming Soon......................
