About Me

.. ..

Fusing traditional and experimental funk beats, jazz/funk horns, with rock riffs and melodies, Hurly Burly has emerged as a square peg in the round hole of music genres. Despite the difficulty in trying to categorize or classify their music, Hurly Burly has shown they have the chops to play with bands such as Fishbone, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Phunk Junkeez, Strung Out, and many others.

So what exactly is Hurly Burly music? Who knows, and who cares really. The only thing that matters is if it's fun and entertaining, which has been the main goal from day one.

With it's beginnings in 1998, Hurly Burly rose from the ashes of many previous bands, most notably Variety Pac (a ska-ish style group) and Implode, a band with a harder edge along the same vein as Tool and Primus. When Variety Pac, after a fairly successful rise in popularity from '97-'98, decided to split to follow different musical paths, the two bands came together to jam. While never intending to be a serious band, the combination of the horn section and the rhythm style inspired a truly original sound that was so much fun to play that the guys just kept at it to see where it would go.

After about a few months of practice, Hurly Burly headed into Dog Run Studios, run by Eddie Casillas of the Voodoo Glow Skulls, to record their first 3-song demo, "The Mess We've Made." The band released the 6-song EP, "The Voodoo Sessions," in December 2000, again enlisting the services of Eddie Casillas. As the band continued to write new songs and play endless gigs (including the most rockin' backyard BBQ parties their home town of Simi Valley had ever seen), they continued to draw a dedicated following. It was during this time that Hurly Burly really broke out and played in such famous venues as the Roxy, Ventura Theater, and the Whisky-a-Go-Go (where they had the pleasure to play with the Phunk Junkeez twice).

September 2001 found the guys back in Dog Run Studios recording what would have been their first full length CD, entitled "Funk Out With Your Junk Out." Release of this CD would never happen, however, as a change in personnel led the band to re-evaluate the state of the music they were creating. HB moved out of the garage and into a studio rehearsal space, and what followed was a complete overhaul of the band's sound, image, and attitude toward what they were doing. The new face of Hurly Burly was actually more of a reflection of the original spirit of the band, where the focus was put more on hanging out, jamming, having a good time and seeing what happened. The chemistry within the band immediately clicked and the crowd reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

Hurly Burly takes pride in not taking themselves too seriously a major factor in the band's ability to create fun, good-time party music with no restrictions. So kick back with a few beers and have some laughs, we'll provide the music.
