Thomas plays in the string quartet "Moonlight Quartet" - www.myspace.com/moonlight4tet. "Cellist Thomas Marlin was a most accomplished and eloquent soloist, teasing out drama, romance, nostalgia and even sly digs of humour from the seven kaleidoscopic twists on a very simple tune" - The Adelaide Advertiser...Adelaide cellist Thomas Marlin is 17 years old and is currently in his first year of the Bachelor of Music performance degree at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. His `cello teacher is Janis Laurs. Thomas has won numerous theory, composition and performance prizes including the David Bishop Medallion (most promising under eighteen cellist) twice. He has also received lessons and masterclasses with cellists Pieter Wispelwey, Raphael Wallfisch, Peter Rejto, Niall Brown and Mei-Lee Stocker.Thomas attended his first National Music Camp in January 2006 where he was associate principal cellist of Alexander Orchestra and at this year’s National Music Camp he was a member of the Beryl Kimber Chamber Orchestra where he worked under the direction of Jan Willem de Vriend and Elizabeth Wallfisch. He also participated in both seasons of the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) in 2006 and attended his 3rd AYO Young Symphonists (for under eighteens) camp in April this year, as principal cellist. As and orchestral musician, Thomas has worked under many distinguished conductors such as Diego Masson, Nicholas Braithwaite, Oleg Caetani, Stefan Asbury, Arvo Volmer, Andrew Mogrelia, John Curro, Keith Crellin and Peter Handsworth.In August, Thomas was a major contender in the Adelaide Eisteddfod winning numerous prizes. Last year, he had a very successful run in the Adelaide Eisteddfods with numerous 1st prizes, including The Music Teachers Association Prize for strings. Thomas also regularly performs in lunch hour recitals with Recitals Australia. In October 2006, Thomas was the recipient of a Tenix Defence Scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to spend a week with the Sydney Sinfonia. In March, he had the pleasure of performing solo with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra - of which he is principal cellist - playing Tschaikowsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme.As a chamber musician, Thomas has worked under the guidance of many musicians including Danny Yeadon and the Flinders Quartet. He is cellist of the string quartet “Moonlight Quartet” who have also played in numerous Recitals Australia lunch hour recitals and have won various awards at the Adelaide Eisteddfod. In July, the quartet attended the Australian Festival of Chamber Music “Winterschool” where they received tuition from leading national and international artists Brett Dean, Raphael Wallfisch, Jack Liebeck, Dean Olding and Irina Morozova of the Goldner String Quartet, Valeriy Sokolov of the Hermitage String Trio and Gillian Ansell of the New Zealand String Quartet. Based at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, the quartet has also received tuition from Janis Laurs, Keith Crellin and James Cuddeford.
