I was born in old Russia (U.S.S.R). My people were enslaved and oppressed by the Communism system. I remember food being rationed and fresh meat was a luxury for the mafia, the rich and politicians.
I had a dream for many years to move to America, the land of the free. At the time when I thought of it, it was too dangerous to leave.
Conditions were so bad back then that no one could obtain a passport without aggravation, even death. If you tried to sneak out of Russia back then and you were caught, you would be executed on the spot. I'm an only child. My parents would have been crushed if anything happened to me trying to escape.
One day, the opportunity came for me to obtain a passport. I took it. I was also accepted to study Science at USC around that time. It took sometime and money to get a Visa but soon after that, I was able to leave and obviously I was not executed on the spot.
Almost 15 years now and I am still living very well in America. I am grateful that life is no longer a burden and love that America is a free country.
