Marsha Hancock is a soulful country singer with a touch of southern blues. Her trademark is her high, resonant belt that brings down the house wherever she performs.
Being born and raised in Oxford, North Carolina gave Marsha her country roots. “I learned a lot about music from the people that touched my life growing up in small town, USA. Country music tells intimate stories about family, love, and life experiences. I feel that people truly see who I am from listening to the songs that I write.†Marsha is influenced by a wide array of virtuosic singers, which include Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and Wynonna Judd. “I learned how to belt and deliver a song by listening to these legends.†Marsha doesn’t want to be just another country ballad singer. She wants to create her own style of country that is infused with rock, southern blues, and soul.
Marsha graduated from Belmont University in May with a Bachelors of Music in Commercial Music with a double emphasis in Composition/Arranging and Performance. She was featured in the 2007 Commercial Music Showcase, where she performed Lee Ann Womack’s Finding My Way Back Home and Carolyn Dawn Johnson’s Forgive. Marsha also did the Bill Cody Show on WSM radio to promote the showcase.
Recently, Marsha won the second Get Rich Talent Search hosted by none other than John Rich. Nine acts competed for fame and glory, plus cash prizes in front of eight industry judges including ASCAP’s Connie Bradley, Warner Bros. A&R VP Tracy Gershon, CMA leader Tammy Genovese, Manager Marc Oswald, Billboard writer Ken Tucker, Producer/Warner Music Creative head Scott Hendricks, Sony BMG A&R Jim Catino and Music Row’s David M. Ross. Marsha felt extremely honored to be chosen to perform for the talent search. John Rich gave Marsha sage advice from a page in his own career playbook, “You’re going to have a big ole platinum hit record some day,†he said. “But you’re going to have to stick to it. Marsha is the girl next door with a touch of the rebellious, can’t take home to mama type. Marsha hopes she can follow Rich's advice and one day become a top country recording artist in the Nashville scene.
