About Me

Hi. This is me, Joyce................. The inspiration for most of the jolei work came from late cellist and friend Arthur Russell. I always think of how Arthur would have played his cello with the songs on this cd, and he was in the room as they were being recorded. It was recorded at Circle Sound in North Carolina. The texture and sonic landscape was really created by producer and bass player Rick Lassiter, and he and all the musicians that worked on the jolei cd are amazing, I feel really grateful. ................. For awhile in the early nineties I was in a band with Joey Ramone called the Resistance. We sang some duets but mostly I did back-ups and harmonies with him. We did some political rallies and Rock the Vote concerts, all around 1994 and we were best friends for awhile. Joey was a musical and comedic genius, yes,no doubt about that, and had a really original mind. Joey and Arthur Russell were both big influences on me and were both wholly wonderful sweet souls, fiercely stalwart in their originality and musical integrity. I think they would intend it to be the seed that enters your soul on your way back home.................. It was a lot of fun being a back-up singer a while back too, and I got to work with all these amazing musicians like Bernie Worrell, Chris Spedding, and the 'Tom Tom Club' and the 'Casual Gods', which was Jerry Harrison's solo group with Ernie Brooks. 'Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors'. More recently I've been with the 'Milagro Saints' in Raleigh, NC, as well as the 'Jack Frost Nippers'and 'Winterbourn'............................................... ....................................................... Thanks for listening.............. *Here are some good things people have said about 'jolei'..................................................... ............................................................ ..... Reviewer: Stuart Hamilton aka Zeitgeist....... An absolute treat! Go buy this now, don’t even bother reading the review. Never mind about the fact that it the CD ‘came about from states of conscious and subconscious love, inspired by working with the late cellist Arthur Russell’. All you need to know is that this is a collection of remarkable songs sung by a remarkable singer. Jolei has an interesting history having been in a band with Joey Ramone as well as working as a back-up singer and working with the likes of Bernie Worrell, Chris Spedding, David Byrne and Chris and Tina Weymouth of the Tom Tom Club. There is a sophistication and melancholic shroud having over the music that subtly drags you into the nuances of the sound and the songs. If you only listen to one track to get the feel, make it “Heartbreak Feelin'”, one of the best songs I’ve heard in ages. Each new listen brings fresh textures to the songs that you missed the previous time, and it is that most unusual of beasts, a record that just keeps on getting better. Jolei doesn’t really sound like anyone else, which is unusual in these days of musical overload.................................................... ............. Reviewer: steven hall.... this haunting and gentle collection stands up to many listenings--there is a freedom from the tyranny of the beat and poppy cliches--the singer has an amazing voice with a wide range of colors and textures from little girl whisper to sultry blue vamp but always tasetfully within the borders of this "dark country".................................................... ............... Reviewer: Keri Lattanzio.....This is a beautiful CD that I can listen to over and over again. Jolei's sophisticated voice has the ability to send chills down my back. I hear something new every time I listen to it. I really love, Heartbreak Feelin'. Great CD.......................................................... ................. Reviewer: Stacey A..... I am fairly new to folk music, but I absolutely love this album. I find myself listening to Jolei all the time...reading, driving, studying, dining...there is never a bad time to listen to this album. It leaves you relaxed and feeling more willing to face the world again, even after the hardest day. I'm looking forward to more of her work!....................................................... ... Reviewer: Sarah Levine...... lingering somewhere between the familiar and unfamiliar, the provocative lyrical and musical terrain is fluid, delicately textured, complex, allowing me to lose a sense of time, while dynamically provoking new thoughts...... ............................................................ ... Reviewer: Jere....... Oh, Oh, Oh, as soon as this disc started I floated down to the meadow from the cover, laid my head in her lap and fell into the gorgeous music. An amazingly consistent album without being boring. I was depressed when it ended. Is she married? If not I am coming to Carolina....Great Disc........................................................ .................. Reviewer: Carol Chapman.....
