About Me

It's good to know your roots, even if you dye your hair constantly. With over 30 combined years of playing experience in the State College music scene, over twenty albums under their belts and enough miles on the road to kill a herd of pack mules, the members of The Clover have created a wonderful fusion of traditional Irish folk and raucous punk rock that recalls the energy and simplicity of old school punk while forging ahead with a decidedly modern flavor.
The Clover (Matt Floravit – drums, Mudzo – bass/vocals, Patrick Newby – lead guitar/vocals and Lance T. Burgess – acoustic guitar/vocals) have combined amped-up arrangements of traditional Irish folk songs including ‘No Nay Never (Irish Rover)’ and ‘Danny Boy’ with anthemic original compositions such as ‘Drink This Problem Away’ and ‘Last Rock Soldiers' from their debut album 13 Steps to create a constant performance of celebration and good times. Their songs bristle with the power of overdriven electric guitars, the beauty of three part harmonies and the sparkle of acoustic guitar all layered on top of pounding drums and thunderous bass.
The Clover is unmatched, especially when one considers the members’ previous and current musical projects. Mudzo is one half of Midnight Love Ensemble , a unique rap group readying to drop their debut album this year. Before that, he held down the low end of the punkmetal band UTM starting in 1998. Prior to disbanding in 2005, UTM recorded two full-length albums, with Patrick Newby joining during the recording of the second album. His face melting solos (formerly heard in the metal band Judgment) pushed the band to new heights. Post-UTM, Newby has been honing his flatpickin’ and dobro skills while recording his own songs and performing as a member of The Slickpicks. Floravit has been smashing the skins in The Deuces for the last two years, laying a solid bed of beats for their speedy brand of punk rock and roll. He previously thrashed with the formerly local hardcore band Giving Chase and also performed as one of the countless drummers in punk with horns stalwarts No On 15 , keeping the rhythm section going with Mudzo. Lance T. Burgess has been plying his brand of “nightmarish, figurative, transparent, elastic, romance-driven folk punk” in Pennsylvania for the last five years as A Brown Leaf , causing tugs on numerous heartstrings around the state.
An evening with The Clover is like with no other band, as their engaging stage banter and fucking great songs make for a show that is sure to evoke sweet memories years down the road. Ready to perform anywhere, The Clover leaves the half-stacks at home and grabs acoustic guitars for more intimate venues. So get your most comfortable drinking shoes on and spend an evening with The Clover.
