Our mission is simply to make more films.I've always wondered how I came to write the story of "abide". I was never sexually abused as a child. People have asked me where the story came from and I could only answer that I didn't know, but I have always identified with the charactors in the story. One morning I was sitting in my chair drinking a cup of coffee, smoking a cigarette, when my Dad came into my head, what followed was a flash of images from when I was 5 years old, he was drunk, there was an orange yellow vase broken in a million pieces, scattered across the living room floor, my parents were fighting, my Mom was covering her face, crying, outside red lights were swirling, inside two cops with big black guns on their hips, were locking my Dad in handcuffs, then he was taken out the door, placed in the back of a cop car and driven away. Not long after, I woke up one morning, my Dad's pearl white 1967 Chevelle was gone and with it everything I had ever known. He never returned. I was filled fear, alone, unwanted, unprotected, abandoned. I remember these feelings well because they are still with me 37 years later.I wanted to make "abide" to reflect the way life really is, with no fairy tale ending, about people who don't have the tools to solve their problems, a story of children who go to bed every night in fear of being sexually molested by those who are suppose to love and protect them. A story of a woman who wonders if her husband will hit her when he comes home from another day of losing, of a man who doesn't know how to take care of his family, of generations of abuse passed to the next generation, with no end in sight.I'd be a fool to think that by making this film I would be magically able to stop these things from happening, but we all must learn not to turn away when faced with difficult issues, they affect us all, we cannot separate ourselves, children and adults alike are slipping through the cracks and it has a huge affect on all of society. Remember as you turn in tonight, maybe from a day of your own disappointments, that a child is being raped, a woman is being punched in the face, a man is drinking himself to death and families are tearing themselves apart.The world is upside down when celebrities are bigger then the films they "star" in and their personal lives are more important then the stories those films are supposed to tell. Who is going to make films that recognize us? Who is going to make films about the abandoned, lost and abused? We are.May your journey be filled with love and understanding.
