He called CBS Sports' HDTV broadcasts of the 2000, 2001 and 2002 Final Four and Championship games. Johnson calls play-by-play for CBS Sports' coverage of the NFL and college basketball. He also has called play-by-play for college football, track and field, boxing, the Hambletonian and bobsled/luge at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games.Johnson serves as host of AT THE HALF, CBS Sports' college basketball halftime studio show, and CBS Sports' SPORTSDESK wrap-around studio show. He is the current radio voice of the NBA's New York Knicks and also provides play-by-play for Madison Square Garden Network's coverage of the WNBA's New York Liberty. Johnson also works as anchor and reporter for MSG's "SportsDesk." He has provided commentary for MSG's coverage of the Golden Gloves Tournament and served as host of the "Yankees ScoreCard," as well as the New York Rangers and Knicks "GameNight." Prior to joining MSG, he hosted ESPN's "Black College Sports Today" (1991).Johnson also called play-by-play for the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, Big East Basketball on the Big East Network, college basketball on ESPN and Canadian Football League games for ESPN2. He served as the weekend anchor for WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C. (1991-92). He graduated from Howard University with a degree in political science. He lives in New York City and has one son. Gus Johnson is active in the Charity: Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan.Early in his career, Johnson called play-by-play for the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball franchise (1998–99), the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves (1996–97), Big East Basketball on the Big East Network, college hockey and college basketball on ESPN, and Canadian Football League games for ESPN2.Johnson hosted ESPN's Black College Sports Today in 1991. After brief stints as an on-air personality with KXXV-TV in Waco, Texas, WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, and WXII-TV in Greensboro, North Carolina, he served as the weekend anchor for WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C., from 1991 to 1992.He may be best known for his yelling and almost screaming play-by-play calls at the end of NCAA Tournament games. He is known for his call of the end of a UCLA-Gonzaga game in 2006, which has been described as "almost incoherent" by several columnists and viewers. Some of his other well known calls include Vermont's 2005 upset over Syracuse and Princeton's 43-41 upset over UCLA.When asked about the 2005 NCAA Tournament on CBS-- Famed sportswriter Bob Smizik wrote "The play-by-play men, in particular, shined. Nantz was good, Enberg, the old pro, excellent and the underrated Johnson the best of the field.Johnson's call of the final minutes of the West Virginia-Louisville game was as good as it gets. He conveyed the high drama of the moment, kept the viewers well informed and allowed himself to get excited but not carried away like some of the new breed, who think top-of-the-line play-by-play means screaming.Although the action was so intense it would have been high drama with a silent background, Johnson provided the little extras that improve the product instead of taking away from it."
