Michael Hawkins is an exciting and charismatic bassist currently living in the Richmond Virginia area. His commanding presence and swinging pulse have catapulted him quickly to the top of his profession, leading him to perform with some of the world’s greatest musicians.
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1967, Michael got his musical start on trumpet at the age of nine. After switching to Trombone, he finally settled on the bass at the age of fourteen. At fifteen he began to work professionally, and by sixteen he was leading his own band. Michael completed his high school education a much lauded and honored musician, and after a number of years working professionally, he received a scholarship to attend Virginia State University to study music. There he found the joy in sharing his musical knowledge with others. Majoring in music education, Hawkins spent countless hours bringing the wonders of music to children of all ages throughout Virginia. He is a gifted educator, and is still teaching private students to this day.
In 1999 the United States Department of State chose Michael to represent the United States in the Kennedy Centers Jazz Ambassador program. Along with percussionist Aaron Thurston and pianist Matt Ray, the trio performed concerts and conducted educational workshops to enthusiastic audiences.Michael has also worked with Jimmy Heath, Eric Alexander, Bruce Barth, Vanessa Rubin, Leon Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Mulgrew Miller, Cyrus Chestnut, Gary Bartz, Donald Harrison, John Hicks, Stephon Harris, Mark Whitfield, Eric Reed, Carl Allen, Steve Turre and the legendary R&B group “The Main Ingredientâ€.
Michael Hawkins is known as the consummate sideman; Hawkins brings a great foundation to any musical setting, as well as complimenting horn players and vocalists with his rich sound. He brings together any group with his talent and good-natured spirit. While he envisions himself leading his own group in the future, at the tender age of 35, Michael Hawkins is poised to rise to the top of the jazz world and is surely a phenom to watch in the years to come.
