SUN CHILD

About Me

Sun Child's work originates from what he has experienced in life and what he spiritually believes. As a child he was considered wise beyond his years and a constant thinker. Aside from the track team at Lincoln-West High School in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio most of his time was spent at libraries around the city reading and writing, and performing in various community theatre productions. Considered an outsider by his peers he was nurtured by the elders and older residents of the Glenville Area that shared their life experiences and wisdom with him. They told him of the days when E.105 was like Hollywood, how Jazz clubs were all up and down the street, and how it all went away during the Hough Riots in 1966 and the Glenville Riots in 1968; it is the aftermath of that time in which Sun Child was born.As the Spoken Word movement began to thrive in Cleveland in the mid 90's Sun Child was compelled to be a part of it after going to several readings hosted by Da Boogie Man and the Black Poetic Society out of Cleveland State University. He began to perform at venues in Cleveland such as Sixth Street Under, The Humidor, Karamu House, Inc. where he was a resident Actor and Instructor in its Theatre Outreach Perfomance Series (T.O.P.S.), Cleveland Public Theatre where he was a cast member of "Underground Griots" directed by Jimmie Woody and featuring other Poets such as Joe "Liquid Rebel" Primes, Manatho "Moonhead" Masani, and Kevin "KAOZ" Moore, and various coffee houses in the area. Sun Child's style is a mixture of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Soul, and House on the urban transcedental tip, thus dubbing himself "The Zen B-Boy that creates life with words and verbs".His debut cd "The Sidewalk Groove Turns Into Dreams" is his spiritual poetic memoir, and is a testimony of where he has been while his second cd "Junior's Journey: Echoes and Whispers, Vol. 1" brings it all back to earth because "change is at hand, and we can't afford to dream no more". His third cd entitled "The Next Phase: Echoes and Whispers, Vol. 2" is currently in production.
