About Me

f'real... i find talking about myself pretty damn boring, but i realize that it's necessary if people are gonna get an idea of who you are.
i represent the land called Nigeria. and i rep it hard.
for a good many years my credo has been "all i want in this life is the same thing my father wanted, which is the same thing that James Baldwin and Ernest Hemingway wanted: to be an honest man and a good writer." (or is that a good man and an honest writer? same difference.) but if that doesn't work out, i'll settle for being rich.
i generally listen more than i talk. and when i do talk, i tend to employ a lot of archaic hipster slang and semi-Victorian lexical choices. i do this not because i'm trying to be ironic but because i learned to speak through the reading of very old books.
"i'm a photo nut" (c) Bob Crane - i'm totally obsessed with photography, while myself remaining notoriously camera-shy. i'm gonna work on getting some snapshots of yours truly up on this page in a minute, but for the meantime, here's a verbal portrait:
when i was younger, i was constantly told that i resembled the J5-era Michael Jackson. so if you extrapolate what MJ might have looked like in say, 1988, had he never glimpsed the waiting room of a plastic surgeon's office, i guess i look a bit like that. just shorter.
alternately, back when "Homicide: Life on the Street" was on, a lot of people said that i looked like that dude Andre Braugher... which annoyed me to no end because that negro look like a toad to me (fine actor, though!). then i realized how many women thought he was hot as fuck, so i was like "okay... i'll bee dat."
i dislike it when people use the phrase "i'm/she's/he's comfortable in my/her/his own skin"... i don't know whether this is because i think that it's something that probably sounded cool the first time somebody said it but now it's just another of the endless bits of softcore psychobabble we utilize in this culture to say things without saying anything at all or because i myself am definitely NOT comfortable in my own skin, which tends to get as ashy as an elephant's ass if not infused with cocoa butter every half hour or so.
(on a totally useless tip, other phrases i dislike include "the _____ from Hell!" and "like ____ on crack/acid!")

My Interests

Music:

let's see... kinda hard to list all the stuff i'm into. you know how some folks say "i like everything 'cept for country & western?" well, i ain't one of those folks... country music is cool with me (MERLE HAGGARD ROCKS, BEEYOTCHES!). there IS some stuff i don't like, though... like the odd bleating sounds a lot of contemporary R&B singers make.

Movies:

some films I have loved: Raging Bull, Citizen Kane, The Apartment, Black Orpheus, Tommy, Vertigo, Buffalo 66, Trainspotting, Brazil, Belly, Rocky II, Delicatessen, Santa Sangre, Bangkok Dangerous, City of God, and (to various degrees) the entire filmographies of Wong Kar-Wai, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Kinji Fukasaku, Joel & Ethan Coen, Sergio Leone

Television:

i watch way more TV than i need to, i think: The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, The Office, Nip/Tuck, The Shield, Coupling, Pop Japan TV, The Daily Show, Teen Titans, Arrested Development, Chappelle's Show, Reno 911!, America's Next Top Model... a bunch of other stuff. oh yeah, i'm also morbidly fascinated with the show Method & Red, though it'll probably be cancelled by the time i hit the "submit" button

Books:

fiction-wise: Haruki Murakami, Walter Mosley, Chuck Palahniuk, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Iceberg Slim, Garth Ennis, George P. Pelecanos, James Ellroy, Etgar Keret, John Ridley is pretty cool, too.

Heroes:

Groucho Marx, Richard Pryor, Fela Kuti, Muhammed Ali
