Satin Gum is an American indie/alternative rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania consisting of Brian Spekis (Vocals, Guitar), Jon Gunnell (Guitar, Keys), Travis Craig (Bass, Boxcat), and Dan Vavro (Drums, Backing Vocals).
The band (originally a trio consisting of Spekis, Craig, and Vavro) formed in the spring of 2008 and quickly released their debut four-song self-titled EP on June 17, 2008. The EP was completed in D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) fashion with the members tackling all duties themselves (writing, recording, and releasing), their only background education coming from the school of trial-and-error. In the spring of 2009, The Gum added a fourth member, Jon Gunnell, on guitar and keyboards. The band is currently drinking some cold beers and recording their full-length debut album scheduled for a summer release.
No strangers to a delectable chow, the band members are often seen in their downtime enjoying a sandwich known as the “Leroy Brownâ€, a half-pound of Angus topped off with homemade BBQ sauce, sugar-glazed peppercorn bacon, and cheddar cheese.
:
"Cool sounds." -Don McAulay, The Pixies touring drummer / Neil Young's drum technician
"Sounds great, guys." -Phil Sumner, British Sea Power
"[Satin Gum] sound like they know what they're doing -- put-together but not overly polished, catchy but not pandering." -Margaret Welsh, Pittsburgh City Paper
"Quirky Indie Pop, I can chew a stick of this." - Check It Out Music
"Being a music journalist in this day and age of music's worst downward spiral since Disco, it was great to hear such a refreshing sound." -Michael Palmer, The Gonzo Network
"This girl has to be bummed. The dude she was dating purposefully took a D.U.I. so he didn’t have to drive her around all day. That has to go down in history as the most elaborately stupid plan to give the slip to a chick. But at the same time Satin Gum, with their track “I Got a D.U.I. Babe†off their self titled debut EP, make the mundane, day to day moments of a relationship seem like reason enough to hit the bottle and hit it hard. The crashing guitars, subtle electronics, and massive hooks give this overcharged power pop gem some legs and lend a persuasive hand to the booze over chick scenario." -Pat Bowman, Speed Of The Pittsburgh Sound
"Pittsburgh-trioen, der har en ep på bagen, stjæler virkemidler med arme og ben og spytter det ud igen som et gennemgnasket tyggegummi. Men med Satin Gum ved roret er de skæve popmelodier så medrivende og idérige, at man tilgiver enhver form for tyvekost." - Soundvenue Music & Expression
"This band has created catchy songs that will leave you humming all day." - RustyBridge.com
"Joyful fuzz" - IPO (International Pop Overthrow) Official Program & Guide
"Satin Gum transcends those simple Indie rock rhythms into new harmonic joys." - The Killer Fleas
" I have to say, this band fucking rocks." -Casey Lowry, Milk Milk Lemonade
"...within a few seconds of the start of "No We Are Not Naming Our Kids After IKEA products" I knew that I was going to love this band." -Fergus Neff, The Musical Blogarhythm
"Lol, I love their song titles." -Becki, Becki's Journal
"Bottom line, these guys are a good band, and they write really good songs. My favorites being "Apparitions (Sweet!)" and "Running Red Lights" I've listened to this disc several times since I've gotten it, and I definitely like it more every time I hear it." -Chris Quigley, Sleepydog Music Blog
"If they could get me, a totally cynical blogger, to download their music then shit they must have something going for them. And yes, Satin Gum have a lot going for them." -Pat Duffy, Pop Tarts Suck Toasted
"But what really excites me as both a fan of music and as a critic of music is when the quality of the tunes matches up with the band’s over-the-top joy, and that’s exactly what’s occurred here with Satin Gum." - Adam P. Newton, Dryvetyme Onlyne
"Local boys Satin Gum recently put out a self titled 4-song EP that sounds to me a bit like Wayne Coyne fronting a younger incarnation of The Foo Fighters. Beneath the low-fi garagey DIY fuzz, there definitely is some talent being showcased." -Brian Naccarelli, The BNAC Music Blog
"Indie rock for the 21st century. Three guys making great music, with a crunch that pleases the palate and hooks that keep you wanting more. A four song EP that begs for a full length release!" -Dave Michaels, WEXT-FM New York
"Satin Gum's influences include many staple alternative acts such as The Replacements, Sonic Youth, and Nirvana, all of which come through on Satin Gum with strong song structures, clear lead vocals and washed out guitars." -Aiden Rox, Fire Drills Music Reviews
"Satin Gum, an indie/alternative act from Pittsburgh, was next to perform. I think they were probably my favorite band of the night;" - Bryan Kish, Distorted Tractor Blog
"...promising locals Satin Gum" -AJ, Pittsburgh City Paper
"... saturated power-poppers Satin Gum" - Aaron Jentzen, Pittsburgh City Paper
"... the local, whimsical Satin Gum" - Lydia Heyliger, Pittsburgh City Paper
"OMG! I don't know. Satin Gum are, like, an experimental Smash Mouth or something." - Disney Music Reviews :
apparitions (sweet!!!)
written by brian spekis
there's a fire somewhere out there tonight
vampires took me to a great height
on the hill above town, we saw...
disappear whenever back is turned
never fear for life will be adjourned
on the hill above town, we saw apparitions
open the gates to the end of the world
SWEET!!!
can you fly, vampire?
on the hill above town, we saw apparitions
open the gates to the end of the world
SWEET!!!
i got a d.u.i., babe
written by brian spekis
stepped out of the bar
got into my car
i got a d.u.i., babe
can't drive you around today
spent the night downtown
next day they let me out
i got a d.u.i., babe
can't drive you around today
can't get you mocha latte
anything i ever said about love
was just the whiskey talkin'
my head's got a secret back door
and the devil he'll come a-knockin'
ain't ever had a sleepless night
without that bottle by my side
i can't say the same about you
i got a d.u.i., babe
can't drive you around today
can't get you mocha latte
anything i ever said about love
was just the whiskey talkin'
my head's got a secret back door
and the devil he'll come a-knockin'
ain't ever had a sleepless night
without that bottle by my side
i can't say the same about you
no, we are not naming our kids after ikea products
written by brian spekis
must be a dream
sent from her last scream
sent across moonbeam
fleeting at the break of dawn
parlez-vous francais?
oh, babe
took care of her feet
a shoe for each retreat
drank her scotch neat
living every day to swan
parlez-vous francais?
oh, babe
running red lights
written by brian spekis
turn the headlights on high
shaky shine in my eyes
i go running red lights
ease my mind through the night
ain't got no rearview
some friends knocked it off
roll me down a window
listen to the road talk
let the air rollercoaster through your hair
get me there
destination anywhere
hooray!
turn the headlights off
i dare myself sometimes
on those back-of-my-hand roads
i go running red lights
let the air rollercoaster through your hair
get me there
destination anywhere
hooray!
