Hi there, this is the bio for singer/songwriter/actor Andy Northrup (sometimes known as Andrew, though not often, as he generally doesn't let folk get away with it. LOL) Andy Northrup is first and foremost a songwriter. He has written for stage, screen and for his own singer/songwriter efforts namely the release of the CD "Slow Burn Avenue" in 2001 and his second effort "Cardboard Logic" released in 2005. Both discs were produced independently on the "R New House Up North" label and both discs have been well received by critics and public/private radio in America, Europe, Australia and Northrup's native Canada. The USA's Stonewall Society further honoured Northrup by eventually announcing him as their "Musical Artist of the Year" for 2005 as well as giving him two other awards for individual songs.
A collaborative type by nature, Northrup credits musician..songwriters like Charles Maisonneuve, Darrin Hagen, Rob Clements and Maria Dunn as typical of the individuals he has written with. Two of Andy's favorite collaborators are his bandmates in "The Andy Northrup Trio", Pat Campbell and Ed Garrick, both of whom are accomplished songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and arrangers. A new collaboration is on the horizon for Andy as he will be making his way to Wales to do some work with Andy Thomas of Progrotech.com for his third disc in the spring of 2007.
As of late Northrup has also been known to take on acting roles in such productions as Lanford Wilson's "A Poster of the Cosmos" (Stagestruck 2005 - Best Director - Amy Defelice, Best Actor - Andy Northrup - note - This piece was remounted for Image Theatre's 2006-07 mainstage season and will be put up again for the 2007 Winnipeg and Edmonton Fringe Festivals for "Smoke Em if you Got Em" productions), Mark Henderson's production of Stewart Parker's "Pentecost" (Studio Theatre - University of Alberta), David L. Nugent's "The Dark Wood" (Theatre Network's NEXTFEST), and George F. Walker's "Better Living" (Walterdale Theatre) amongst many others. His latest stage endeavor was playing "Mac" to Sue Huff's "Marlene" in Northern Sabbatical's production of Linda Wood Edward's premiere script "Spring Alibi" (directed by David Cheoros), for the 2005 Edmonton Fringe which played to sold out audiences and as a result toured to Washington, D.C. in 2006 to play at the Canadian Embassy as part of the first annual Washington D.C. Fringe Festival. It was most recently featured at the Nakai Comedy Arts Festival in Whitehorse, Yukon in January of 2007.
As an actor, Andy has also been featured in films and commercials most notably in Ben Babchishin's sextet of short films including "A Gun, A Cigar and A Bottle of Scotch" (Alberta Motion Picture Industries Association Award 2004 recipient for "Best Drama Under 60 Minutes" with Northrup's lead role being nominated for "Best Performance by an Actor"). In addition, Northrup has written script and storylines for film and television with his most notable credit being Ken Brown's whacked out view of cafe life, "Cafe Utopia", which has played art houses across Canada.Other aspects of Andy's creative endeavors include writing five musicals for stage in collaboration with folks like Allan Gilliland, Gerald Osborn and Marty Chan. Andy has also been active in composition for theatrical/film productions and sound designing for 14 shows. Credits in the Western Canadian theatre scene include Shel Silverstein's "The Devil and Billy Markham" (directed by Kevin Sutley), HA! (written by Chris Craddock and Wes Borg, directed by Eileen Sproule), Morris Panych's Seven Stories (directed by Matt Kowalchuk), and SuperED (written by Chris Craddock and directed by Steve Pirot) amongst many others. Another new initiative in Andy's career is writing text for Allan Gilliland's "Blessed" a classical choral work commissioned by Pro Coro Canada and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Influences: Mostly singer/songwriters like Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Jez Lowe, Bruce Cockburn, John Mellencamp, Martyn Joseph, Neil Finn, Garnet Rogers, Jann Arden, Cyndi Lauper, George O'Dowd (Boy George), Shawn Colvin, Iris Dement and on and on. Love lots of rock oriented stuff like Green Day, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Queen, Elton John, REM, The Cars, Metallica, U2, Richard Thompson. Very excited by Crowded House getting back together and touring. Just saw the Police two weeks ago and if you haven't seen them you should. They're back together for the right reasons and rocking out. It's great.
Sounds Like: Andy has been described by Outlooks magazine's David Crosson as "Bruce Springsteen with 'fag' on his t-shirt or Bob Dylan with a shrunken hypothalamus". This made Andy laugh out loud and wonder how Bruce and Bob would have felt about the comparison. Larry Flick of Billboard magazine called Andy's 'Slow Burn Avenue' "a sterling debut" with J. Knutson formerly of Canada's "Spirit of the West" describing it as "introspective and well-written tunes by Edmonton's best kept secret". Andy's second effort "Cardboard Logic" was raved about by Andy Donnelly of Canada's CKUA radio as "lyrically brilliant and musically great" with Frank Hennesey of BBC Radio calling it "dark, intense and just great". Hear them and decide for yourself.
