» About Mr. Trancis
I've always loved playing & performing music since childhood. From drumming on buckets and toy containers to marching in my high school band down Kalakaua avenue with a drum I could barely see over, music had always been in my life. Little did I know that this passion would carry on and help me to realize my career as a DJ.
Things started off when the rave scene had started to surface back in 2000. This new and exciting style of music made me want to dance, even if I couldn't. I bought a few CDs, downloaded quite a bit from related artists and found myself hooked. I put my passion for music along with my new found love for 'rave music' together when I got a hold of MTV's Music Generator for Playstation. I'd make miniature productions for my amusement, constantly trying to figure out what made this music so addicting for many. One day I heard DJ Paul Brandon's Mix at Six on the radio. I heard some songs I knew, yet I suddenly noticed they were linked together, the beat didn't stop in between. Inspired and intrigued, I thought to myself the next step is learning to DJ.
Without knowing where to start I went to a teen nightclub event that mentioned a DJ school on the flyer. Nothing happened at the event but I did see numerous DJs walk in with large stacks of records that definitely weighed more than I did. I left the club realizing that it was merely a fundraiser for a DJ school that was opening in the future.
About a year had passed and I'd continue listening and learning and immersing myself in Trance music, before remembering about the DJ school I heard about called Musical Youth of Hawaii. On the website, they were accepting signups so I did not hesitate at all. I enrolled in the class lead by local veteran DJ (soon after my greatest mentor) James Coles, he taught many of the basics of music before allowing the students to touch the equipment. My experience with music in high school band definitely gave me the edge over most of the students and before I knew it I was rubbing elbows with the best in the industry.
Of course I had only been playing hip hop at all ager events, grad parties, not really ever having the opportunity to play at a rave. In 2004 I had attended my first Love Festival, which was also my first rave. The lights, the music, and the people, indescribable. Nothing at all like the crowd I had gotten used to being in front of. A couple years had passed before I got the opportunity to play the music that I loved at a promotion called Livewire. PSI; another local veteran had offered me the opportunity that would open more doors that I had imagined. I'd work closely with Erick and Jaegurl and Livewire as a whole to help rebuild what was left of the rave scene.
It wasn't long before Paul Brandon himself had me on the lineup tagging with PSI for House Of Wax vs. ID4. Getting up in front of the crowd of people in Pipeline Cafe was the greatest feeling in the world. Seeing the lasers scan across an ocean of movement and glowstick light streams was something out of a dream for me at the time.
To this day, I'm a household name in the current rave scene, which I may not have become had it not been for those mentioned above. While other DJs forge a name for themselves to get around, I let my music selection and ability do the talking.
