Fred Torphy writes interesting songs - structurally simple, while emotionally, rhythmically and tonally complex. As the bandleader of San Francisco's own Big Light, Fred is usually busy writing for the band's cadre... but more and more frequently around town - and up and down the California coast - you can catch Fred either by himself with a guitar (and/or backed by one of any number of instrumental collaborators), on stage, singing and playing his songs. Hard-pressed to draw comparisons or cite influences, there's a little bit of a lot of things in Fred's music. What's most interesting and most memorable is what of himself he's put in there... a well-developed, signature guitar technique and a fast-evolving, unique vocal style are marking his newest material as the most original to date.
