Sept. 18, 1880: The Star is founded by William Rockhill Nelson and Samuel Morss. It faces competition from two morning papers, The Times and The Journal, and an afternoon daily, the Mail, each priced at a nickel a copy. The fledgling evening Star sets its price at 2 cents a copy and sets its editorial policy to cover local events intensely.
The poet Eugene Field, then editor of The Times, tweaked his new rival in verse:
Twinkle, twinkle, little Star
Bright and gossipy you are;
We can daily hear you speak
For a paltry dime a week.
