SEXPLOITATIONI finally broke out the DAT player and uploaded a few digital tracks. So far just Golden Shower Power Hour/Shake and Welcome to the New Age. I will slowly replace the other analog tracks up there with digital as well. I also started scanning in photos and finally got around to putting up some videos. Thanks to everyone that keeps asking for new material. If you've got any photos/videos please send them my way. Also I just started this page: Sexploitation_Facebook , it's still under construction but when it's done it will have our entire available catalog of songs since there are no space restrictions on FB.Love, Mikey ------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------- Sexploitation Head live at the Rat 02-20-92

Add to My Profile | More Videos ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- Here is the bio-timeline so far:------------------------------------------------------ 1990: Guitarist Jimmie Walker had just begun rehearsing with Drummer Gabe Luxton in January of ‘90 (whom he’d known through mutual friends) when Bass player Michael Tauber responded to his ad. Michael was playing in the same rehearsal space down the hall in a different band that just wasn’t a right fit, and after one jam session joined up and the trio began looking for a singer. A few months later, Michael was handing out flyers on Lansdowne Street when fate intervened and brought him Jonathan Kelley. The boys immediately knew they had found something quite special and unique with Jonathan and asked him to join. The band wrote all summer and made their Boston debut in the fall with an aggressive schedule of shows in and around the city including The Paradise, Axis, Bills Bar/Venus, Narcissus, The Rat, Bunrattys, TTs, The Channel, and Derringers, along with many random gigs at anyplace they would get noticed. The band garnered an immediate buzz on both the “metal” and “indie” scenes with their genre mixing blend of rock. 1991: In January of ‘91 they entered Fort Apache Studios and recorded 6 tracks with Joe Harvard. They released a demo which garnered them their first taste of commercial airplay on WBCN, WFNX and WAAF as well as many local college stations such as WERS, WMFO and WZBC. From the demo, the tracks “Sequin Syringe” and “Fruit Song” received much attention and praise from local critics and DJs. With a growing audience, positive press, steady airplay and newly acquired manager Cecilia Tan , the band embarked on a summer tour which began in Cincinnati and ended with a handful of shows in Los Angeles (with as many shows along the way as they could find). Accompanied by their friend Christian Stone (who was on a one way trip to L.A.) they hit the road for 3 months and had the time of their lives. The tour was playfully dubbed “the Summer of Sexploitation”. After the tour the band played their homecoming gig at Bills Bar/Venus with the impotent sea snakes from Atlanta (a band that they would cover much ground with in the years to come) followed by participating in the annual College Music Journal Music Marathon in Manhattan at the Limelight with Marilyn Manson for a crowd of over 2000 (their biggest show yet). At this time the band began making regular trips to Atlanta and Tampa to play with the impotent sea snakes as well as frequent shows in N.Y.C. and throughout New England. 1992: After playing Live Music Week on WERS the band was offered the opportunity to work on their next recording project in the WERS studios with Christina Chin. They began recording numerous tracks at WERS with Christina who also become the band’s full time live audio engineer. From these sessions the band released their first official 7-inch single “Garlique” backed with a rerecorded “Sequin Syringe” on their own Glitter Girl Records. The single did well on both WBCN and WFNX local shows and the band was invited to participate in the WBCN Rock-n-Roll Rumble at the Paradise. The band continued to play regionally and expand their fan base in New England, New York, Georgia and Florida while focusing on getting national press. They began to expand their sound, taking on more complex technical arrangements, psychedelic themes and darker imagery all the while upping the caliber of their sexy-glam high energy stage shows. One night in particular things got a little out of hand at the Rathskellar involving Jonathans clothing (or lack thereof) and Sexploitation was “banned from the Rat” for about a year or so until they were told they could return “as long as no one gets naked”. 1993: The band returned to WERS for round two of recording with Christina and released their second single “Black Acid Jig” backed with “Golden Shower Hour Power” and “Shake”. In addition to pushing this single locally the band began an aggressive campaign of garnering press around the world. The band received positive reviews from the press in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, France, England and Spain as well as throughout the U.S. The band also began chatting up various major labels (though looking back they probably should have stuck with the Indies) in particular Interscope. However with an image that typically did not match their sound most labels found the band too extreme or risky compared to what was selling at the time and no deals were ever reached. The old cliché “too ahead of their time” was thrown around, though it did not phase the band or cause them to alter their direction or appearance. In fact the band continued to push the envelope with their racy stage shows including (but never limited to) body paint, g-string underwear, hot pants, fishnets, platform shoes, sequin mini-skirts (a staple in JK’s wardrobe, on stage and off), tubs of glitter sprayed about, bubble machines, x-rated Disney-like cartoons, go-go dancers, masks, explosions and what ever else they could think of and get away with.1994: The band entered the studio with Paul Hagar to produce what would be their final recordings. The band recorded “Amanda Disturbing” and “Special K”, two tracks that on the surface appeared to be lyrically lighter and more playful while musically more jammy. From a technical perspective this was probably one of the bands finest performances in the studio. Sadly this material was never officially released due to the break up of the band in the summer of ’94. After 4 ½ years of putting everything they had into making this band happen the boys began to feel the sting of music industry. During their first few years the band just exploded on the scene and they were convinced that by this time they’d be recording for a major label. Unfortunately those deals never materialized, and while all members were feeling the burn, Jimmie felt he needed a break. He took what was going to be a one month vacation in Seattle and then made the decision not to return to Boston. The other 3 members decided not to continue without him at this time and the band went on indefinite hiatus.1995: This year Jonathan, Gabe and Michael attempted to reunite and possible reform the band though they decided it was probably time for a new name. Jonathan had been living in India for quite some time and came home in the summer of ’95 and began writing and rehearsing with Gabe and Michael. This brief reunion was shaky at best. They did explore additional guitar players as well as no guitar player but Jonathan’s personal demons kept him from being focused and reliable and he eventually took off to live in N.Y.C. That winter Jimmie and Jonathan came home for the holidays and reunited with Gabe and Michael and all got together to play all their old songs. It was just for fun and for themselves with no audience. This would be the last time they would all play together as a band. 1996: For this year Jonathan was living in Manhattan teaching horseback riding, Jimmie was in Seattle playing trumpet and working towards becoming a firefighter (a job he currently performs), Gabe continued to play drums locally in various project and Michael temporarily moved to Atlanta and joined up with the impotent sea snakes. They all got together once again during the holidays but did not get the opportunity to play music. At the time it was satisfying enough just to all be in the same room. This was the last time all four would see each other at the same time. 1997: Once again Jonathan, Gabe and Michael flirted with reuniting during the summer and fall. Gabe and Michael had been playing regularly with various projects and would get together with Jonathan to jam and write whenever he would come home. With Jonathan living in N.Y.C. the writing was slow going and unpredictable and never got past the development stage. 1998: Again through the desire to play music with each other, Jonathan and Michael began writing by way of sending back and forth material between Boston and N.Y.C. Both Jonathan and Michael were quite eager to rekindle the magic they had in Sexploitation and kept in close contact and tried to figure out the logistics of how they could play in a band together. Sadly the band never materialized past this stage as Jonathan passed away in the summer of ’98. It was a devastating loss to loose someone so vital and full of life. If you knew Jonathan, you knew how unique and amazing he was, you knew how he lit up the room (or the stage) the second he walked in (or on), you knew that he changed your life and that the world was a brighter place while he was in it, you knew that you would never forget him and that you’d always miss him.
