Influences: This is us on local Fox news. Here we are playing with our homemade instrument, a selectric typewriter that plays keyboard with the text being projected behind us. The song is called "Binary" and consists of a list of binaries - two words that have a dual/opposite meaning. We start by listing obvious ones, like black:white, good:bad, and the familiar one:zero, (as in binary code). Towards the end we start to blur the line a little by using pairs that should be complimentary opposites, but aren't that simple. Like cop:criminal, for instance —cops can sometimes be criminals. We added a new one just for Fox news -- news:propaganda. After we typed that up on the screen, we played the infamous "terrorist fist jab" sound bite from cable's Fox channel. If you're unfamiliar with - they showed a clip of Barack and Michelle Obama giving each other a fist pound, followed by an anchor calling it a "terrorist fist jab". The absolutely amazing thing about all this, is that not only did Fox not comment to us about our statement, they posted the video on their website. It either went right over their heads, or the Triad's local Fox station is just plain old cool.check it out:Ask Mark, he's the art department.
Here's a Video of the song 20 Questions, performed earlier this year at 1001 in Greensboro, North Carolina. It features Jodi on the Selectric Piano, an instrument built by Fred Snyder and INVISIBLE's Mark Dixon that interfaces a typewriter with a piano. each of the 88 keys on the IBM Selectric typewriter corresponds to one note on the piano. text generating melody, melody generating text. it was shot by Jon McLean and editied down by Bart Trotman.
This video is also availible on our new EP, In Spring and also on the new 8088 Records Comp, due out in Feb. If you want a copy, write us and we'll send it your way.
