Donna Maria Pimental, Soprano

About Me

Soprano Donna Maria Pimental’s performances of operatic roles have been described in review as “pearly, lilting soprano” and “easy presence and clear, confident singing.” (The Wichita Eagle) Her portrayals include Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore, Emmy in The Vampire, the Daughter in the Midwest regional premier of Michael Torke’s Strawberry Fields, Gretel in Hansel and Gretel, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Despina in Cosi fan tutte, Miss Wordsworth in Albert Herring, Le Feu in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges and Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann. Miss Pimental has performed with companies such as the Asheville Lyric Opera, Opera Kansas, Light Opera Oklahoma, and Opera New Jersey. In addition, she has performed scenes from West Side Story as Maria with the prestigious William Inge Theater Festival honoring playwright Arthur Laurents. The soprano was a semi-finalist at the Connecticut Opera Guild Competition where she was reviewed regarding her performance of Bernstein’s “Glitter and Be Gay” as “a show-stopper by any standard, demonstrating that she not only has a sound singing voice but a flare for the dramatic as well.” (operaonline.us) _______While in her hometown of Brevard, North Carolina Miss Pimental completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree, cum laude, at Brevard College and attended the Brevard Music Festival as a member of the Janiec Opera Company. She went on to receive her Master of Music Degree in Opera Performance at Wichita State University where she was a recipient of the Graduate Assistantship Award, nominated into Pi Kappa Lambda honors society, and awarded the Kansas Cultural Trust Enabling Grant. In April 2007, Miss Pimental was awarded Second Place Prize in the Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition and was featured in OperaOnline.us Magazine for a "Spotlight on the new Generation" Singer Profile. In May 2008 she performed as selected Semi-Finalist in the Opera Birmingham Competition. Most recently the soprano was named Finalist in the 2009 Long Leaf Opera National Vocal Competition.

Sounds Like: REVIEWS: OLYMPIA in Les Contes d’Hoffmann: “Of Hoffmann's doomed lovers, Donna Pimental took the cake as the doll Olympia. Her mechanical movements were realistic, and vocally she pranced through the coloratura variations in her big aria "Les oiseaux dans la charmille." -- The Wichita Eagle__CONNECTICUT OPERA COMPETITION: “While Ms. Pimental didn’t take home one of the thirteen awards, her lively rendition of Bernstein’s Glitter and Be Gay was a show-stopper by any standard, demonstrating that she not only has a sound singing voice but a flare for the dramatic as well.” -- OperaOnline.us__DESPINA in Cosi fan tutte:“Best on Thursday was Donna Pimental as Despina. She’s a natural for the role, and her easy presence and clear, confident singing helped settle the ensemble.” -- The Wichita Eagle__GRETEL in Hansel and Gretel:“Pimental sang with a pearly, lilting soprano and had a delightful, girlish presence” -- The Wichita Eagle__OPERAONLINE.US PROFILE ARTICLE:"She sang the aria “Glitter and be gay” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” and scorched the stage with a performance that oozed sensuality and feeling. Moreover, she wore the “little black dress” very well" -- Paul Walkowski
