About Me

Hi and welcome! This page is dedicated to the music of Balkan Tales. For my other endeavors in music, film, puppetry and more, please visit me at www.vladatomova.comBalkan Tales weaves traditional songs from the Balkans, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East into a contemporary acoustic sound, mixing old world flavor with the zest of a modern metropolis. WNYC's Soundcheck introduced our music like this: "Of all the varieties of World Music to hit American shores, none may have as much strange, otherworldly beauty as the women’s vocal music of Bulgaria. .. Vlada Tomova brings this sound to .. Balkan Tales."We've brought the music to enthusiastic audiences in USA and Canada, and look forward to more soon!We have completed our first full-length album; recorded and mixed at The Looking Glass Studios and The Argot Network, and mastered at Sterling Sound, NYC; stay tuned for the release!Stay in touch and thank you for sharing all the great music here ~ best, Vlada Join Balkan Tales' eMail List

Some of the early arrangements developed with Muari Vieira. We would like to thank the American Foundation for Bulgaria, for the invaluable support in making our record, and Malincho International, for providing us with tour support.
Influences: .. where to start.. it all started with jazz, funk, and some pop, of course, then, eventually, back to Bulgarian women's music, arranged, as Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares, and further more back, to the roots and the village style of Bulgarian singing, as well as the art songs and Russian romances that my mother sang ... in between, there are so many people and artists that have brought me on course of my current travels .. to name a few, chronologically, would be.. Pat Metheny Group with Pedro Aznar, Tracy Chapman, Anita Baker’s album of originals, Carmen McRae and Betty Carter, especially their irresistible live duo appearance, Manhattan Transfer’s jazz repertoire in masterful four-part harmony, Mercedes Sosa’s profound voice in her all acoustic recordings, Seru Giran, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Bobby McFerrin, with his wild musical spirit and total use of the voice, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Take 6’s incredible vocal and harmonic abilities, Astor Piazzolla and his quintet, Dino Saluzzi, Tom Harrell, Cassandra Wilson, Gilberto Gil, Gaetano Veloso, Pino Daniele, Angelique Kidjo, Dulce Pontes, Lenine, Salif Keita .. I have listened to some of their albums again and again, for weeks at times, taking in every nuance of a note, timbre, mood, or texture.. I am grateful for it forever!
Sounds Like: possibly Savina Yannatou, a neighbor in the Balkans .. and Dulce Pontes, Sara Tavares, Cristina Branco, neighbors in the Mediterranean, and all singers I love .. Yasmin Levy, to go a bit to the East, yet still a very close neighbor in every way ..
