Linda Gabriel, 23, is one of the crop of exciting female performance poets to emerge out of Zimbabwe. Bilingual, her linguistic versatility is forged into brilliant poems written in either English or Shona, depending on which language effectively expresses what issue. She started performing poetry in high school and has since participated in major literary events in Zimbabwe and the rest of southern Africa. She gives credit to Victor Mavedzenge, Albert Nyathi and Charlie Dark a British poet for mentoring her to be the charming performer she has grown to become. She is one of the poets to take part in the British Council initiative, Power in the Voice that saw her travel to Zambia. In her steady rise to stardom, Gabriel has shared the stage with an array of gifted wordsmiths Chirikure Chirikure, Julius Chingono, Ignatius Mabasa, Comrade Fatso as well as young poets Batsirai Chigama, Outspoken, Theresa Muchemwa and My Brother’s Keeper. In January 2009, Gabriel has added a musical dimension to her performance and formed a performance band aptly named Open4mo that includes Ticha Muzavazi on mbira, Stanley on acoustic guitar, and Gabriel herself slamming her poetry to the rhythms.
