Northwest Classical Theatre Company

Portland's Award-Winning Classical Theatre

About Me

The Northwest Classical Theatre Company is a non-profit organization founded in 1998 by Artistic Director Grant Turner. We specialize in classic works by great authors with an emphasis on the authors' own writing and not the directors' concept. The NWCTC is the resident company of Portland's most intimate performance space, The Shoe Box Theater (2110 SE 10th Ave. Portland, OR 97214).
A note from Grant Turner, Artistic Director of the NWCTC:
I started this company for the most selfish of reasons. I felt at the time that no one was presenting plays that I wanted to see in ways that I thought they should be performed. I wanted to perform plays for their artistic merit or for their entertainment value not for their ticket selling ability. I wanted to present plays in an unadorned, accessible way that mirrored not only my artistic sensibilities but my belief that theatre is about communicating with an audience first and foremost. And finally, I wanted to have fun. I never in a million years dreamed that so many others would share my passion.
A company is not one person and I could have never achieved anything without everyone's help. My special thanks to Richard for his dependability and reliability through all of the years. To Fred and Bibi for making me realize that what we have here is something that deserves to be shared. To David and Racheal for making an old warehouse into a home. To Allison and Rio for never doubting or questioning the magic that is the NWCTC. To Butch and Melissa for validating my theory that theatre can be fun.
And to Tom for being my best friend and number one fan. Most important of all I thank Nicole for believing in the first place that this company could exist.
I remember several years ago, I marveled that every show we had done up until that point had been enjoyable one way or another. It occurred to me that some day that streak would have to come to an end... Several years later it's still going strong.

Dramaturgical Note
by Rhianna Walton, NWCTC Dramaturg
From the Terrifying to the Macabre
In Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven the protagonist whispers chillingly to the reader, “Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, / Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.” Shaking, the man stares out the door into night’s abyss, not yet sure what the consequences of his actions will be, or whose presence it is that he feels so acutely. Halloween exists in this moment of suspension, between certainty and the unknown, day and darkness, life and death, time past, present and future. For the Druids Halloween was a time of divination, when the border between the living and the dead blurred to allow congress between the two groups. Not a scary time, per se, but a night when time ceased to be tripartite and each moment became an anarchic mix of past, present and what was to come.
In the 2,000 years that have elapsed between the Celtic celebration of Samhain and what we call Halloween, the emphasis has shifted from fortune telling to Frankenstein. And while Halloween is still very much a festival of night and madness, it has lost many of its original connections to ancestor worship and the harvest. One of the elements that has been preserved, however, is storytelling. The Celts told stories of the future; the medieval Church of saints and martyrs; Victorians of love and matchmaking; and Americans of ghosts, ghoulies and things that go bump in the night. Halloween remains a night of collective narrative and costume theatre, little different from the Celtic dramas or candle-lit “play parties” of colonial America.
It is with this in mind that producer Tom Walton presents From the Terrifying to the Macabre. Each play and short story explores the power of tales to elicit excitement, desire and dread in its listeners. Whether ghost story, horror piece, or crime thriller, the texts illuminate how the past divines the future, and how the choices we make are eternally tied to the dead. True to the origin of Halloween, our tales are more unsettling than gruesome. They invoke the monsters of history and the monsters within. After all, the tell-tale heart that beats out human guilt and obsession is far more terrifying than any ghoulie.

"I love working with NWCTC for a hundred reasons - I love Will (of course), I love the language, I love the Shoebox, I love the people, I love what NWCTC aspires to do. Brandee Haynes
NWCTC Performances
Bio coming soon!

Joe Healy
NWCTC Performances
Joe Healy is very excited to be the newest member of NWCTC. He first ventured into acting at the ripe young age of 31 when he took his chances with an acting class at Portland Actors Conservatory (PAC) . Two years later in 2000 he was a graduate of that great program and he's been hooked ever since. You may have seen him perform primarily for Triangle Productions in such shows as Pageant, Shopping & F***ing, 10 Naked Men and Circle. Other favorite roles (where he kept his clothes on) include You Can't Take it With You and Fuddy Meers for PAC; Love of the Nightingale for Vertigo Theatre, All My Sons at Profile Theatre, Amadeus at Lakewood, Boy Gets Girl for Coho Productions, and the Portland Center Stage JAW Festival. Joe would like to thank Grant Turner and the rest of the company of NWCTC for inviting him to be part of this up and coming ensemble and to fulfilling a dream among many! 'Your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And where there is no vision, the people perish.'

Colleen Heidebrecht
NWCTC Performances
Colleen premiered with NW Classical Theatre in their first production at The ShoeBox (Romeo & Juliet, 2005) when Grant asked her to play Peter and the apothecary in a cast that included the illustrious Michael Pennington. She immediately felt at home with this lovable troupe family, and favorite roles since have included Ariel in The Tempest, Player Queen/Gravedigger's Daughter in Hamlet, and Amiens in As You Like It.

Kenichi Hillis
NWCTC Performances
Originally from San Diego, CA, Kenichi studied acting at Humboldt State University , earning a BA in Theatre Arts. Previous productions have included Approaching Zanzibar, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Philosophy of Fish, The Importance of Being Earnest, Baal, Romeo & Juliet, and The Communist Dracula Pageant. He has appeared onstage with NWCTC in The Tempest, Henry V, and Titus Andronicus. He lives with the love of his life Sarah, their son Russell, and Noir--his ever-faithful canine companion.

Richard Reiten
NWCTC Performances
Richard is an old time member of the NWCTC - in all of the meanings of the term. Grant Turner gave him his first chance at a role with this company when he cast him as the Porter in the 1999 production of Macbeth. Since then not a year has gone by that he has not appeared in one or more NWCTC shows. His favorites: The Porter, Hardcastle in She Stoops to Conquer, Polonius in Hamlet, Ward Evans in The Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Paravicini in The Mousetrap, Wargrave in And Then There Were None, and Prospero in The Tempest.

Jayson Shanafelt
NWCTC Performances
In 2002, Jayson Shanafelt was living out in the middle of the Oregon farmland, literally in a trailer in the middle of nowhere:
"I remember vividly that it was a summer evening after work. I was coming out of the nearest grocery store in a town about 15 miles away from where I lived. I bought a newspaper as I headed back to my truck. I opened up the Arts and Entertainment section and read that the Northwest Classical Theatre Company was searching for actors for their upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. My heart pumped vigorously at just the mention of the possibility, given that although I had plenty of college theatre experience, I had never taken that next step and auditioned for a professional company before. I did love Shakespeare, though. I mustered up the courage to audition…and the funny thing is, I didn’t hear back for weeks. Weeks! By the time I thought I must have totally sucked it and blown the audition, I got a message on my voicemail asking if I would like to be part of their production."
While he is no doubt thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the NWCTC and its work, he feels much more indebted for the friendships that have been made...and to be allied with such talented, unpretentious people.

Sara Simon
NWCTC Performances
Sara is absolutely thrilled to be a part of NWCTC where she has most recently appeared in Much Ado About Nothing, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Titus Andronicus. She has also performed with Portland Actor's Ensemble, Blue Monkey Theater Company, Oregon Children's Theater, and Portland Center Stage's JAW Festival 2007. A senior at the Arts and Communications Magnet Academy , Sara enjoys good books, good coffee and good people.

Bibi Walton
NWCTC Performances
Bibi made her glorious return to the stage because her adoring son tactfully told her that an old lady was needed in a play he was doing. Since then the NWCTC has not been able to get rid of her. Besides acting and directing she has happily assumed the role of den mother as well as the most frequently noted actor in local newspapers. Love you mom.

Rhianna Walton
NWCTC Performances
Rhianna Walton has a BA in Literature and Theatre from Reed College and MA degrees in Modern Jewish Studies and English Literature. She spends most of her time behind the scenes as the NWCTC dramaturg, but occassionally appears on stage, most recently as Rachel Corrie in Think Outside the Shoebox's production of My Name is Rachel Corrie and as Phoebe in NWCTC's As You Like It. She is excited to play Jessica in next season's Merchant of Venice at the NWCTC! Outside of the theatre, Rhianna teaches English at the Art Institute of Portland and sells books at Powell's . She lives with her handsome husband and their equally attractive cat.

Tom Walton
NWCTC Performances
Tom's the type of guy that likes to roam around hes never in one place he roam from town to town. And when he finds himself fallin' for some girl he hops right into that car of his and drives around the world, 'Cause hes the wanderer yeah the wanderer he roams around around around around around around.
(I love you Grant, and you Rhianna, and most of all you scarecrow)

Melissa Whitney
NWCTC Performances
Melissa joined NWCTC in 2006 after playing Vera Claythorne in And Then There Were None. Since that time, she has worked with NWCTC on a variety of productions and roles; her top favorites being Rosalind in As You Like It, Lavinia in Titus Andronicus, and Montjoy in Henry V. During the day, she teaches Special Education for the Beaverton School District . Through Northwest Classical, Melissa has been given the opportunity to grow as an artist, travel abroad, as well make some very dear friends along the way!

Elizabeth Young
NWCTC Performances
Elizabeth is originally from England, but she only speaks with a dialect when a role calls for it or if she has too much to drink. She focused on Medieval/Renaissance studies while getting her BS in Theatre from Portland State University , and is happy to be part of a group that actually makes that focus relevant. She maintains the website for the company and does the trailers (the video kind, not the "Fine, I'll be in my trailer!" kind.)
