It was after several Kansas City, Gays and Lesbians, returned from the 1987 March on Washington with a renewed spirit of activism. During one of Kansas City’s First Gay Pride Picnics, a group of Gays and Lesbians began networking and meeting at The Westport Allen Center to discuss the possibilities of creating a public affairs program for our “Community.â€
>>>>>In another part of town, after nearly 15 years of fundraising and organizing, KKFI 90.1 FM made it’s debut on our airwaves in February of 1988. KKFI was looking to provide a voice for the voiceless, a place for women, minorities, Labor, Native Americans, Black Americans and other minority groups "under served" in our local and national media.
>>>>>John Korbelik was one of founders of The Tenth Voice. It is his voice that you hear in our opening theme song: “Because you refuse to be silent.†John and others created “The Tenth Voice†forging together different ideas from the committee. Along with, Greg Hanson and others, they created a 60 minute program, that was pre-recorded and submitted to KKFI Management for consideration. KKFI management placed the tape on a shelf at the station, where is sat and collected dust.
>>>>>Almost a full year passed, and on the very last Friday night, in January, of 1989, one of KKFI’s programmers: writer & activist, Lloyd Daniel, wasn’t available to do his weekly show due to conflicts at school. He called in to say he couldn't make it. Time was running out and the Station Manager, at that time - Tom Davis, frantically searched for something to put into Lloyd’s time slot. That’s when they recovered it, that dusty tape, on the shelf. 90.1 FM KKFI broadcast that tape of the first The Tenth Voice program and then called Greg Hanson and told him to be ready with another show the following Friday. This is how the very first Tenth Voice made it onto the airwaves. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Greg Hanson and John Korbelik scrambled to get re-organized. Between the recording of the first show and it's eventual broadcast many folks from the original committe at The Westport Allen Center had, by this time, lost interest or left town. Ardie Viet eventually joined as a host, as did many others. Greg Hanson served as a chief Producer and Host and kept The Tenth Voice on the air from 1989 to 1999. At KKFI Greg served as a Board Member and eventually became General Manager. The current team of The Tenth Voice want to thank Greg Hanson for his long time efforts and dedication to Community Radio and LGBT Concerns. In 1999 Greg left KKFI and asked Linda Wilson to continue organizing this weekly program. In 2001 Brad Huit and Mark Manning joined the team. Eventually Mark became an organizer of the program. In 2003 Jason Clinton joined The Tenth Voice as part of The Youth Radio Edition. Jason's work with Kansas City's Passages allowed for the voices of dozens of Kansas City's LGBTQ youth to be heard on The Tenth Voice. In 2005 The Tenth Voice was actively involved in The Day of Silence with GLSENKC and the Breaking The Silence Rally & Concert. In 2006 Elaine Meizlish joined the team of The Tenth Voice as a regular host and producer, bringing her incredible experience as a counselor and psychologist to the show. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
