Summerhouse formed in 1990 by songwriters Rachel Charles and Jo Tomkins.
Throughout the last 17 years they have notched up achievements such as being the only band to have won the Cambridge band competition twice, in ’94 and ’96. The band winning the second time prompted the organisers to create a new rule of winners not being allowed to re-enter. They have supported the likes of The Cranberries, Heather Nova, The Bible and Sam Brown. Acoustically Rachel and Jo have played support to Irish songwriter Cristy Moore and local Cambridge legends
Ezio and Boo Hewerdine. Although never signed, throughout the 90’s Summerhouse were courted by several large record labels, interested particulalry in the songwriting talents of the pair.In recent years, after several line up changes, Summerhouse disbanded, seeing Rachel and Jo occasionally concentrate on songwriting but rarely perfoming. In 2007 having enlisted the help of Jonny Brading on percussion, renowned local guitarist Rob Jackson (Boo Hewerdine) and Violinist Roz Orwin they played to a sell out show at Club 85. With a renewed enthusiasm, some new and old material and a whole new sound the band have now recruited the incredibly talented songwriter Paul Goodwin on piano and Alex Machell (Low Country) on bass.
