Gustavo Costa is one of the main Brazilian guitarists of his generation. He is Prize-winner at guitar competitions in Brazil, France and at the prestigious Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Francisco Tárrega in Spain, where he got in 2003 the 2nd prize and the prize voted by the public. His performances in recitals, in chamber music and as a soloist with orchestra have often got critical and public acclaim for his sensibility and virtuosity. As a soloist, he has performed the guitar concertos of Villa-Lobos, Rodrigo, Ponce, Miranda with orchestras in France, Spain and Brazil: Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Ciudat de Torrent Orchestra, Sao Paulo University Symphony Orchestra, Ribeirao Preto Symphony Orchestra and the Petrobrás Symphony Orchestra – Rio de Janeiro.
Born in 1976, Gustavo Costa started learning guitar with Geraldo Ribeiro de Freitas in 1990. In 1994 he enrolled for the Bachelor in Music at the Arts Institute of the Sao Paulo State University, where he received lessons from Prof. Gisela Nogueira. In 1998 he continued his studies under Prof. Franz Halász at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg-Augsburg, where he got the Meisterklasse-Diplom, the highest performance degree of Germany, with the distinction “Summa cum Laudeâ€. From 2001 to 2004, he studied guitar under Pablo Márquez and ancient music repertoire under Yasunori Imamura at the specialization class of the Strasbourg Conservatory - France. He holds a Master’s Degree in Musicology from the Sao Paulo State University.
