About Me

Dena Iverson-Rivera is author and playwright of the play,“Funky Good Time - The Musical Life Story of James Brown." The play is a mesmeric, rousing ride through the 60’s and 70’s complete with hot pants, hip-huggers, bell bottoms, afros, dashikis and of course, the music that shaped our nation. One of the most influential entertainment figures of our time is brought to life with his colorful past and exciting brand of putting the funk in your face. Never before has there been a play so full of music that is guaranteed to make you want to get up out of your seat and “move your feet”.
From James’ humble beginning at his aunt’s whore house in South Carolina, to the reform school where he was hired as a singer, this play takes you backstage and onstage with the funkiest group to ever perform. Not only is the famous, soul-riveting songs of James Brown featured but five original tunes have been added to enhance the story and in the style of funk for which James Brown has become so famous.
Ms. Iverson-Rivera writes, "I wrote my play because I am close personal friends with Bobby and Vicki Byrd (Bobby was the reason Mr. Brown was allowed to leave the reform school when he was a teenager and begin his career. Bobby's gospel group gave James the chance to sing out front as a condition of his release. They were with him from the beginning and told me the entire story). After completing the first iteration of the play and having it copyrighted, Mr. Brown gave his blessings through Mr. Bobbit, his long time friend and close confidante (also close friends with the Byrds). It was as much written for them as it was a tribute to Mr. Brown."
Being prepared for production, look for the advertisement coming soon to a city near you.
