Giorgio Serci was born in San Gavino Monreale, Sardinia, an Italian island, which has been influenced by a variety of cultures as it is in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. African, Arabic, Spanish, Roman to name but a few.
Similarly, Giorgio's musical palette has been influenced and enriched by music from all over the world. After travelling, studying and performing in different parts of the globe he is establishing himself as guitarist, composer, arranger and teacher.He started playing guitar at the age of 13 as a self-taught then went on studying classical guitar with Marco Meloni at the "Nuova Accademia" and Jazz in Ravenna, Italy with John Scofield, John Surman and Tony Oxley.In 1994 he moved to London to study at Goldsmiths College, gaining a Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music (with special commend) and a Diploma in Music Teaching. Then, went on studying composition and arranging for Jazz Orchestra at the City Lit College.He arranged music for the City of Birmingham Simphony Orchestra, the BBC, violinist Anete Gaudine, guitarist Antonio Forcione to name but a few. Played with Julian Loyd-Webber, Ronu Majumdar, Vic Juris, The Royal Family of Jordan, Rony Barrak, mixing Arabic, Indian rhythms and scales with Jazz, Brazilian and Flamenco music performing in Beirut, Tripoli and other cities in Lebanon Europe and in UK at the Purcell Room, St.George Bristol.In 1998 recorded his first co-lead CD "Lo Scenario" with Simon Davies.In 1999 he founded the six piece band Big Sunflower and won the International Jazz Award Sant' Anna Arresi, in Italy.In 2000 Giorgio and the pianist Bob Stuckey recorded the CD "Loch Ness". Then recorded in Beirut for the EMI label and the singer Nawal Zoughby. Next, supported Shirley Bassey at the Royal Festival Hall, and performed along side the saxophonist Andy Shepperd at the Brecon Festival, Jazz Cafe and at City of Birmingham Symphony Hall. He also performed with Japanese musicians Shima Kobayashi and Ryuko Mizutani.In 2000, went to New York to perform and record his own CD with Harvie S (aka Swartz), Virginia Mayhew and Allison Miller. This CD "New York Sessions" is out now with the NAIM label and available in all good shops world-wide. From 1998 to 2000 Giorgio joined force with Flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niebla with whom he has toured world-wide and recorded a CD.In 2001 began the collaboration with guitarist Antonio Forcione with whom he performed for three years with successful tours world-wide and a CD which include one of Giorgio's compositions "Watercolour" and one of his arrangements of Astor Piazzolla's Masterpiece "Tango Suite"In 2002 Giorgio joined force with comedian Boothby Graffoe, touring and recording a CD for the BBC, with Ross Noble.In 2003, Giorgio joined the project "Let Freedom Ring" by the Saxophonist Denys Baptiste and played at the North Sea Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Berlin Jazz Festival..He has recently performed solo at the Purcell Room as part of the London International Guitar Festival and at Sony Jazz Stage, Riga Latvia and at the Sage Gateshead for the Global Guitar Night triple bill with guitarist Sylvain Luc and Thomas Leeb, and double bill with Martin Taylor.Giorgio is a degree lecturer at the "Academy of Contemporary Music", Guilford, UK, a columnist for the “Acoustic Magazine†and endorses Yamaha guitars and Mark Acoustic amplifiers.
