NEW DAY DAWN represents a new chapter for Dawn Botti and her husband/ drummer Gary Szczecina. Formerly the dynamic front person for the New Jersey hard-rock band, Slushpuppy, Dawn is looking forward to forging ahead on this new musical journey.
From 2000 -2005, Slushpuppy had effortlessly gained a rabid following, racking up a laundry list of accomplishments; including several tv and film credits, an Asbury Music Award nomination for “Best Rock Act” and joining the NBA’s Rhythm and Rims Tour. The band’s music and energy, which was both beautiful and thunderous, afforded them the opportunity to share the stage with the scene’s then biggest up-and-comers like Shades Apart, Glassjaw, Dragpipe and The Kickovers. After recording a successful debut EP (“Unleashed”) that ranked as the 15th most added song to college radio the week it was released, the band returned to the studio to work with well-known producer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Jawbox, Screaming Trees) for its second recording in early 2001. In 2002, Slushpuppy returned to the studio to work with hard rock producer Chris Gibson (Quicksand, Rival Schools, Dragpipe, Adharma). In 2003 Slushpuppy had landed a coveted sponshorship with JAGERMEISTER and Matt Pinfield showcased their song "Runaway" on New York’s top hard rock station K-ROCK. It seemed the band was unstoppable, but personality conflicts, creative differences and "burn out" eventually took their toll and the group decided to "take a break" before the end of that year.
Botti was extremely disheartened by the decision, but knew that her musical journey was not over permanently. First, she knew she’d never have to look far for at least one perfect bandmate: Gary Szczecina, her high school sweetheart turned husband in 1994, plays drums and contributes his songwriting and backing vocal talents. The couple’s long-standing passion and teamwork has been the secret ingredient behind the their musical perseverance.
Second, she knew that rock was in her blood. "At first I thought that I would not play music again, at least not beyond my living room. But I’m a born performer and I feel like a part of me is missing if I’m not pursuing my passion of writing and performing music on a more public level."
"But this time," Botti insists, "things will be very different." She has made certain of that by chosing her new band mates very carefully. She signed up PJ Angeloni on lead guitar and Robert Choe on bass. The two come with the added bonus that they have been playing together for many years with their other original project "LATCH". "These guys are true professionals and don’t have individual agendas. They are letting me be in charge. Which is both scary and exciting." The music is different from Slushpuppy, but not entirely unfamiliar territory. "I will never be a "mellow" singer. I’m a rock chick through and through. But I’m a more mature and experienced rock chick now. And my lyrics and songs reflect a new attitude toward life."
Botti’s new attitude is most likely attributable to the fact that she and husband, Szczecina, have become new parents since the days of Slushpuppy. The couple welcomed their son Walker James Szczecina in March 2005, and he is now 2 years old. "Having a child changes everything," says Botti, "you see the world through new eyes. Everything is exciting and wonderous again. And you can’t help but feel constant love surrounding you. "
