JOHNSTON was founded in the year 2000 by drummer WORZ and guitarist MACE , who had been knowing each other for over 20 years already. The band..s name at that time was ASTEROIDENGÃœRTELTIER , but that turned out not to be the real deal...
WORZ was a remnant of a hardcore band called FOE INSTINCT (one demo release called ..NO GOOD REGULATION.. / MC / 1994 ), that was renamed to ORANGE BUD after a few lineup changes. The musical orientation changed a bit towards a more melodic style, especially concerning the vocals. Through certain circumstances, O.B. decided to split up after a short time.
While WORZ emerged from a relatively ..straight to the point.. style of music, MACE originated from a slightly more progressive musical environment. The band most worth mentioning would be SENTIMENT , who released two demos in 1995 (MEGA SEGA SONIC / MC) and 1997 (SECOND DEMO / only a few selfmade CDs). MACE was the combo..s bassplayer. Their style was a hard to tell mix of shred and waltz attached to a lofty jam-based corpus.
In 2000 then, the old kindergarten-mates WORZ and MACE decided to cross their beams, mostly because almost all the other former musicians they had played with in the past had vanished in a freak accident called ..life... WORZ and MACE forged the plan to create a style of music, that was totally different from what they had played before. The musical base they chose was a kind of boltthrowerish, blastorientated ..deathgrindkindofthing... In the beginning, that was a hard task for both of them, because none of them had played that sort of style before, but they just loved it. So WORZ learned the blast and MACE , who had transformed his bass into a 7string guitar, tried to manage the vocals.
After a short while, they got aware of the fact, that two people were not enough to produce the desired sound. A friend called SchMoe was recruited to be JOHNSTON co-vocalist, but he then left the band in 2004 .
The only thing missing in that time to complete the lineup was an accurate bassplayer. JOHNSTON did not have to wait too long, since WORZ came to pick up a guy called KAPTAIN on a nightflight at the Bermuda Triangle in 2001 . That little drunken KAPTAIN carried with him the brandnew master-CD of his braunschweig-originated sludgedoomrockband SPANCER (COUNTDOWN TO VICTORY / CD). While listening to it, they discovered their collective faible for doom music. What should we say ? A new love was born, JOHNSTON and KAPTAIN (aka FRAPTAIN ) married and went on to write songs together.
In 2005 , after SchMoe had left and several unlucky tries to recruite a second guitarist, JOHNSTON accepted their fate, that they would have to climb the throne of music as a three-piece. And then it happened: JOHNSTON found the guitarist, that they had given up looking for. Yes. It was McFLY , a nice young guy with a favor for really, really hefty music like later GORGUTS, but almost no band or live experience at all. But so what ?
Having McFLY in the band opened lots of musical doors for JOHNSTON that had been nailed before. They discovered those possibilities and began to put another level on top of the existing songs. Instead of just doubling the guitar riffs, they recreated many of the parts to make them more complex or confusing or whatever. The effect until today is, that JOHNSTON try to create their own style and to push their personal limits, even if it's hard...
Since JOHNSTON is "not exactly the FLASH" and is already moving as fast as he can, it still gets him somewhere. And this is:
