About Me

Soft Records was born into the world at the very end of 1999. Its creator Kevin Purdy wished to create a label that housed the music that he made, as Purdy, as well as Tooth. A musical project which started in early 97, when Purdy met and hooked up with musical adventurer Shane Roberts aka Sir Robbo. Finding it difficult to find a label whose general philosophy on things lied somewhere near to ours it was time to put the great dream into creation.
Soft001: Purdy - Kevolution - With a romantic idea to wind up the millenium with our first release, Purdy’s debut album hit the shops at christmas time when the whole industry is shut down and noone’s releasing nothing. This turned out to be a boon, with reviewers raving extatic and very good sales. It also received Album of the Week status on communty radio around Australia.
Soft002: Purdy - Tyranikal - We then released a 12” vinyl release of this cut from Kevolution. Tyranikal had been causing some excitement in the underground dance clubs, with its’ primal afro-beat groove. It was reworked by Infusion, the Kooky Kids as well as alt version from Purdy.
Soft003: Tooth - Sirens from here to Titan - Meanwilst in the Tooth camp a growing number of great new psychedic creations were nearing to completion since their debut No Strings, released with no label in ’99. Their second album Sirens from here to Titan, was released early 2001 to a fanfare of exstatic praise, in the press and on radio. This exposure hightened Tooth’s profile so that they were soon chosen for supports with Tortoise, Manitoba (aka Caribou), Labradford, Burndt Freidman and Pan Am, as well as festival performaces and many headlining shows. Tooth had grown to a trio by this stage with the inclusion of bass supremo John Maddox, who brought new magic, incredible bass and great company to the project.
Soft004: Tooth - Shift / Sons of shade - The next release was a 12” vinyl single of two new Tooth tunes. The single showed a development and change in Tooth’s direction, setting the tone for their next album.
Soft005: Purdy - Fairytale Insurance - In amongst all of this activity Purdy found time to create his second album, Fairytale Insurance, an album which took his personal musical vision to greater heights. Released in 2004, this was another release that hit the target, establishing an even higher level of kudos and respect. Becoming Album of the Week on six of the best community/alternative radio stations around the country, as well as rotation on JJJ and amazing press. Purdy gathered a posse of great musicians together to take the Purdy experience to the stage, doing many extremely memorable performances, including a set with Tortoise, receiving an adoring response from the packed crowd.
Soft006: Tooth - Mudlarking - In May of 2006 Tooth celebrated the release of their third album. An album that grew slowly over the 5 year interval, that grew, like a tree, out of the ground, with new colours and unexpected sounds coming together in their suprising new album Mudlarking. Tooth gave this album the full Spector/Wilson treatment, with many great guest musicians coming in to aid in its creation, including the legendary Daevid Allen, who added glissando guitar and vocals. The production, the music, and visuals came together like a dream. Mudlarking has garnered stunning reviews, a ton of airplay.
There are all sorts of plans in the works for Soft Records, Purdy's next album should be out in the first half of 2009. He is also working on an ambient album, plus there are all sorts of lovely collaborations happenin' for the future
Peace out

Influences: We have been touched by so many things. Influenced by our environment, our friends, the weather, the things we love, the things we hate.
The music discovery never ends. Bits of soundtracks and sunshine pop bleeding into the throb of German psyche, overlaid with a Beach Boys harmony, struck dumb by a Neil Young chord, reinvigorated by the pulse of Oneness of JuJu or Cymande.
Rocked awake by Television and Suicide.
The mind puzzled and electrified by 'Moon in June'. Tickled and turned on by 'Lady grinning soul' or 'Spaceball ricochet'.
Haunted by Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Shelagh McDonald, Vashti, Nick Drake and John Martyn.
All shook up by the Silver Apples, Faust, Pere Ubu and Brainticket.
Lee Scratch Perry, Joe Meek, Sun Ra and Bruce Haack lighting fires under our complacent asses.
We are influenced by the peacemakers and forward thinkers and are brought to anger by the monstrous evil of the super powermongers.
The influences never stop.
Sounds Like: Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs chewed slowly through tape echo
Angels having a pillow fight
Grass growing
