Shadow Pilot, a downtempo creation of sibling duo Joseph and Alaina Ferris, combines contemporary hypnotic themes with traditional moody sound stylings. From hip hop to international rhythms, Shadow Pilot’s music has captivated the most discriminating tastes.
Shadow Pilot’s first public release of Long Days is heard as a remix on rapper Somobe’s album, The Great Commnication.
Joseph, also known as JD, as been producing music for 7 years, and is known for creating music that leave listeners saying, “I can’t get that song out of my head.†Drawing on his early love for piano creations, this artist blends and composes keyboard genres ranging from Trance, Hip Hop and even cinematic orchestral scores, and has even combined all elements in one song. Regardless, Joseph’s haunting melodies are not easily dismissed.
Composers that influenced Joseph’s musical love include composers Danny Elfman, James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith, and also Electronic groups like The Crystal Method and The Chemical Brothers. Joseph’s music now is influenced by the Bay Area where he resides. He currently is involved in a project that uses a live DJ act and electronic show that incorporates popular dance music with real time effects and live guitars. Joseph is also focused in creating tracks used in independent film productions.
Alaina Ferris draws on her formal training and exposure at Denver’s Lamont School of Music where she studied jazz theory, and performances of noteworthy jazz musicians like Donna Wickham, Malcolm Lynn Baker and Eric Gunnison. Other musical greats that have influenced Alaina are Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day, Tori Amos, Josephine Baker and Edith Piaf.
Alaina’s interpretive styling reflects her personal philosophy about lyrics. “Many people no longer pay attention to the art of lyrics or the linquisitic aspect in music. Often, Language or verbal imagery is what drives my inspiration in music,†Alaina says. Authors that have influenced Alaina’s writing style are Philip Pullman, Anne Carson, Peter Shaffer, Jack London, E. E. Cummings and Paul Fattaruso.
For over 4 years, Alaina has performed in Colorado venues that have included Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, Oriental Theatre, Oscar Blues and Scarpelli’s Italian Restaurant (where she performed as the house piano player).
