About Me

Mission Statement: Formed in December of 1994, NATIVE ROOTS strives to fulfill the Lord’s great commission to “Go into the world and preach the gospel…” (Mark 16:15) Fresh and exciting, the music of NATIVE ROOTS shares the gospel through their music – combining scriptural messages with the Roots Reggae vibe.
Group Bio Wa sup you guys! Hope your enjoying the website so far. I bet you’re trippin’ out on what’s going on with Native Roots!! I mean they sound like regular “Roots Reggae,” But some songs they talk about Jesus. What happened to Rasta? Then some songs they talk about regular worldly stuff. So what, they Rastas, Christians or they Party Animals? Now relax and I’ll tell you.
When I first started playing music, it was just to party, party, party. Music for me was totally for the wrong reasons. I played music and got all messed up almost every night. My biggest problem was girls. The more parties, the more girls. I never cared if I hurt them or what, just as long as I got what I wanted. But I was never satisfied. I always needed two or three girls and that was a big problem. Then Native Roots was formed and I met a beautiful girl (I was with another girl at the time too) and I fell in love. Everything was going perfect. I had one pretty girl and one cool Reggae band and I had enough money to party. Then all at once everything went bad for me. First I lost my job. I couldn’t go anywhere without depending on someone. Then big problems at home started. My mother and father was stressed out because I wouldn’t come home. And when I did, it was when the sun was coming up in the morning and I was wasted. My sister just got pregnant from her boyfriend and the whole family exploded. Everyone in the house had something to say and everything was not nice!!! There was screaming, swearing, crying, and sometimes fighting. No bloody good!! Then on top of that, my pretty girlfriend found out she had cancer. It was the end of the world. Everything was bad.
One day a good friend of the family was talking to my father. My father was telling him about what was going on. So my friend said, “Why don’t you come to church with me?” My father, not knowing what else to do, finally said “O.K.” So my father called me up and said, “Boy, Sunday we go church.” I said “What?!” He said, “Yeah 9:30 we go.” I was trippin’.
Sunday came and we went. We only knew one person in the whole place but everyone was very friendly. It was weird!!! The service went on and it felt like the message was for us. Me and my father was trippin’. After that, we went home to tell my mom and my sister that church was awesome and they should come next week.
Next week, my whole family came and the same thing happened. It was a service just for my family. This time we were in tears. I could hear the sobbing of my strong father as well as my sister and mother. At the end, the Pastor asked anyone to raise their hand if they wanted to know Jesus. I thought about it, then I did it, I repented and put my trust in Jesus. Then all at once I was totally cleansed. I felt like I took a shower on the inside. Burdens were lifted and I felt a peace that I never had. It was unreal! From that day on I was a new man. Then next day I still felt the same way. It was awesome. So I shared it with my Band and my girlfriend. It was a struggle at first because some didn’t believe. It took a couple of services then my girlfriend got saved. Native Roots went through a big change. I wanted to use this band to spread the Good News and some didn’t. So God changed the band. There was only Raine, BJ and me. BJ started coming to church with me, and in a month accepted Jesus. And, Raine started going back to his old church and accepted Jesus.
We needed more members for the first album and this band so we asked Jeff from church, and he agreed to play (he already was a Christian). The incredible thing is from only three members, the Lord put this band together two weeks AFTER we signed with Tropical Jams. In other words having faith in God that it was His will we sign a contract to make this CD with only three members. GOD Is GOOD!!!
Ten members, ten different stories ended up playing music for the same reason, to spread the Good News about Jesus Christ. So that’s our story. Hope you enjoy. God bless you, Leighton Mendiola
P.S. My sister gave birth to a healthy baby boy. I married my beautiful girlfriend whom the Lord delivered from cancer and who just gave birth to our beautiful baby girl Hailey in January (Praise God). And my Mom and Dad finally found peace in their house.

Influences: On that Day …What will be after our end has come? What lies in eternity? Where will you be? Are you prepared? Would you heed the warning if you knew that eternity contained ULTIMATE JUSTICE? And one day you would have to stand before a JUDGE that burns in ABSOLUTE RIGHTEOUSNESS? Do you know what LAW you would be guilty of breaking? The LAW of GOD: 1. I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make or bow down to any idols. 3. You shall not take My Name in vain. He who does shall not be held guiltless. 4. Remember the Sabbath Day. 5. Honor your Father and Mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not lie. 10. You shall not covet.Have you ever lied? That would make you a liar. Have you ever taken anything that didn’t belong to you? That would make you a thief. Have you ever used God’s or Jesus’ name as a curse word? That would make you a blasphemer, and you will not be held guiltless. Have you ever looked at someone with lust? Jesus said in Matthew 5:28, that is adultery of the heart! The Bible says you will have to give an account for every thought, word, and deed you.Acts 17:31 God has appointed a day, in which he will JUDGE the world in RIGHTEOUSNESS. Romans 3:19 Every mouth will be stopped, and ALL the world will become GUILTY before God. Psalm 14:3 They are ALL gone aside, they are ALL together become filthy: there is NONE that doeth good, no, not one.You are guilty of breaking the LAW of GOD. What would be your sentence? Heaven or Hell? Does that concern you? Do you know what God did for you so that you wouldn’t have to go to Hell?God sent His Son into the world to live a perfect, sinless life and offered up His own body unto death on the cross for our sakes. Jesus’ death on the cross reflects God’s love for us in ‘while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, being justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath’ (Romans 5:8-9).John 1:29 Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.Do you know what GOD requires of you to receive His forgiveness? Mark 1:15 The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: REPENT ye, and BELIEVE the gospel.REPENT means to CONFESS and FORSAKE the ways of sin. BELIEVE means to TRUST JESUS with your entire life.2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.You have been told. You have been warned. How will you stand... On that Day
Sounds Like: We have a PROBLEMStatistics show that during Evangelistic events people seem to “come to Christ,” then in a week’s time 85-95% of them cannot be found in fellowship. When a big tragedy happens, the churches fill up for a week or two, then eventually empty once again. We find people who attend church “rededicating” their lives to Christ week after week with no REAL change in their lives. Why do some people act and talk a certain way when in the church, then behave completely differently outside of the church? Why is it hard most times to distinguish in a crowd, who the Christians are? How can some people who seem “sold-out” for God one day give it all up and embrace the world and sin? Is this the Christian Life?Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.Millions claim to be Christians, but are they really? Read carefully Titus 1:16 again! Do you think there are multitudes of people who think themselves to be saved but will end up spending eternity in the Lake of Fire? Did you know that Jesus warned that will happen?Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 1 Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God. Matthew 24:51 Appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.God will Judge with no discrimination of amount of church attendance, Bible reading, or Prayer time. ANYONE can participate in these things. God will only save those who truly belong to Him. How can we know that we are Truly Saved? The Bible says to EXAMINE yourself and PROVE that you are in the faith! In the Book of 1 John we find a ‘test’ that defines what a Christian IS and what a Christian IS NOT:1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 2:3-4 And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 2:5-6 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him. He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked. 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure. 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 5:18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. If you were crossing the street and got hit and run over by a garbage truck, wouldn’t you be different? After that encounter, would you be able to walk the same? Talk the same? Live the same as before? Here’s a question: What’s bigger … a garbage truck or GOD ALMIGHTY? How can anyone claim to have had an encounter with God and not be radically changed? Unless … they had no such encounter! What are you basing your salvation on? Make sure it is nothing but the atonement of Christ’s blood! The ONLY way to Heaven is by putting to death the flesh and its deeds, denying yourself and picking up your cross daily, and walking in the Spirit of God.John 3:3 Jesus said, Except a man be BORN AGAIN, he CANNOT see the kingdom of God. 2 Timothy 3:9 The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. Hebrews 12:14 Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.
