A Brief History
DJ Extreme started playing on the pirate station Fresh FM in 1996 also playing at the Flashback events. From there he quickly gained a reputation for spinning cutting edge beats.
“ Back then most DJs where playing a lots of the same stuff, I preferred mix up house and Garage from both sides of the pond as well as other different styles like drum and bassâ€
Extremes love of music and his then unusual section got him a slot on Chicago FM, this is when things really began to happen for the young dj. Playing on Chicago FM gave him more of an audience, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Lady Spirit and The Bubbling Crew. His weekly show gained popularity, which in turn gained him spots at some of UK Garages finest clubs including Garage Nation, Pure Silk, A One Night Stand, Liberty, Cookies and Cream, Garage Nation and Peach at then Camden Place.
“ I loved playing at peach, I remember a set I played there, they used to operate a unlimited guest list for guest dj’s there, I will never forget the look on the promotes face when all my people rocked up, we use to ram that room out, I quickly become a regularâ€
He also became a regular at Kismet the popular Sunday morning session, which helped to launch the careers of many of the top UK Garage djs like Pied Piper and Funky Smith.
After a long stint on Chicago and regular appearances at a number of the premier UK Garage clubs Extreme moved on to Mac FM Tony McMahon’s hugely successful radio station. By now a regular at the main UK Garage Events around the UK.
He made his McMahon promotions debut playing at Underground Explosion, which took place at the legendary Club Colosseum.. He then moved on to play at Exposure. At this time he was also becoming a regular at the Gass club though many of the Paul K Productions events such as A One Night Stand, Ticklicious and Cum Taste The Honey.
“ That was a good time the scene was at good point good music good vibes “
Rubbing shoulders with the likes of EZ, Martin Larner, Mike ruff cut Lloyd, Pied Piper and Matt jam Lamont. Extreme decided to launch his own imprint Natural Essence Recordings which hosted a successful launch with Ticklelicious at the Gass.
Over the course of this period he started to get offers to play in the US, in 2000 Extreme made his stateside debut in New York at the Limelight and Fahrenheit Clubs his fusion of UK and US styled House and Garage when down with the cosmopolitan New York crowds.
2001 He hooked up with Jon E Cash and Da Black Ops and helped to pioneer a new sound, “Sublowâ€. He hosted the very successful sublow show on Ice Fm , which became one of the stations most popular shows.
“ Even now people still remember those shows we did, it was myself sly mc and Rider, it was a lot of fun to do! I think the reason for the success of the show was, I was playing music 3 to 4 years ahead of its time, no one else was playing the tunes they where coming straight out of the studio on to dubplate and being played by me on my show, plus the vibes we created in the studio were top draw â€
Not a lot of people understood the vision of Black Ops producer Jon E Cash at that time so extreme was the main DJ playing his stuff. Playing sets on Shine, Rinse, Xtreme FM and as well as a regular set on internet station Major FM showcasing new Black Op’s material and touring around Europe. While working with Black Ops Extreme helped to promote many successful club tracks like “War†and “Invasion†as well as many releases from his own Natural Essence Imprint.
