In a small village, in the beautiful island of Corfu, musicians and bands from many parts of the world transform the summer nights into a celebration of live music through the squares and streets of Pelekas.
PELEKAS STREETBEAT is the annual live music event that takes place from mid July to mid August, in the village of Pelekas, 14klm from Corfu town. The unique natural beauty of the surroundings, the Blues melodies, Rock n'Roll tunes, Latin grooves, Greek music and many other ingredients mix together in the unique flavor of this street music happening.
People can enjoy the concerts sitting in the surrounding restaurants and bars or just dancing in the streets. And then there always a beach party waiting to happen in the surrounding beaches…
The story of live music in the village of Pelekas goes way back to the 80’ and even before. The small picturesque village, for more than 20 years, has been a destination for travellers in search of something different. In the 80s and early 90s backpackers from all over the world flocked to the village looking for cheap, alternative holidays. Some of those same people still return every summer to meet up again with old friends.
The alternative life style, the beautiful beaches, the bars, clubs and restaurants have, over the years, attracted many musicians. At night the bars, taverns, squares and of course the beach were always full of live music. Guitars, didgeridoos, bagpipes, fiddles, harmonicas, trumpets, saxophones (and many more) have all featured at some point in one gig or another. Buskers would exchange song books and copy chord patterns from each other. Jam sessions were monumental and the singalongs of epic proportions - especially under a full moon. Bands, duets and trios, would form from one night to the next and contacts were made to follow up on at a later date. Some of those same musicians, together with a new, younger generation, still bring their instruments as well as their bathing shorts. In recent years their desire to perform in Pelekas, together with the desire of the local council and businesses to attract visitors, gave birth to PELEKAS STREETBEAT.
Most recently, in 2006, bands from Italy, Greece, Holland and the UK played in the two village squares. People came from surrounding towns and villages to enjoy the music, eat, drink and dance.
Long may PELEKAS STREETBEAT continue!
