Hillfillies were formed in 2002 when three school friends, Anne, Lina and Kajsa, decided it was time to do something themselves rather than just being in “other people’s†bands. Having discovered “old fashioned country music†by listening to Dolly Parton and Dixie Chicks amongst others, the decision was taken to start a Bluegrass band with mainly female musicians. Anne bought a banjo. Lina dusted off her old violin and Kajsa borrowed her dad’s bass guitar. Their sound was rubbish! Lina considered re-training from classical violin to bluegrass fiddle, but chose instead to buy a guitar. Kajsa realised that bass guitar was for weaklings and switched to her dad’s double bass. Now we were getting there! After a while Edith turned up at rehearsal with her mandolin and, luckily, stayed! We searched for a female dobro player in Stockholm, but with no luck. At the Torsåker Festival 2003 we had built up enough courage to ask the great dobro player, Janne, if he would like to join us…to our surprise he said yes! So, by the autumn of 2003, Hillfillies had the members it has today.
