The Wheatsheaf Hotel

About Me

At the Wheatsheaf Hotel we like to keep things simple.
You won't find pokies, flatscreens, cocktails or RTD's at The Wheaty. You will find a pub that keeps Beer real, Wine independent, Whisky odd, Music live and Art public.
Think Front Bar pool table, darts, quality microbrews, distinctive whiskies, good coffee, eclectic original live music, monthly art exhibitions, plenty of couches, a real beer garden, a semi-enclosed dedicated band room and open fires in winter.
Bands:
From cult accordion ensembles, string quartets and jazz ska to alt-country, nu-folk and rockabilly.
Exhibitions:
From solo artists to collectives; first timers to established artists; brushes and cameras to computers et al; Fringe, SALA and Feast Festival-related to stand alone; political pisstake to just plain pretty, The Wheaty’s Public Art is best enjoyed with pint in hand…
Tap beer:
We pour full flavoured, characterful Australian craft beers on tap: no mainstream or “imported” lagers; it’s all about real beer. With two brand spankin' new taps, we now have 13 beers on tap......
Currently pouring:
Little Creatures Pale, Pils,Rogers’ and Pipsqueak Cider; Cooper’s Pale Ale and Sparkling Ale; James Squire Porter, Pilsner and India Pale Ale; Moo Brew Hefeweizen and Pale Ale; Mountail Goat India Pale Ale and Surefoot Stout on the hand pump.
Bottled beer:
A distinctive, seasonal, style-based beer list featuring quality micros and imported world classics with a bias towards full flavoured and bottle conditioned brews.
Including:
Moo Brew, Emerson’s, Schneider, Weihenstephaner, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada, Unibroue, Young’s, Timothy Taylor’s and Westmalle…
Whisk(e)y:
A fluid selection of odd whiskies from renowned distilleries and excellent whiskies from unusual distilleries; sometimes peaty, often cask strength and rarely stained by caramel.
Wine:
A combination of Old and New World wines with an emphasis on small regional based producers of quality and variety: think Austrian Gruner Veltliner next to McLaren Vale organic Shiraz beside French Pinot Gris…

Hop Thief on tap for The Wheaty’s 6th Birthday
Join us Wheatys for a schooner or 3 of Hop Thief (5%ABV), the latest limited release brew from James Squire and the third in their series of “Hop Thief” brews that explore how different hops impact distinctively on the flavour of beer.
Hop Thief III is an aromatic, crisp and well balanced ale that features a trio of feisty Tasmanian grown hops tackled in a way rarely seen by local brewers. Pale, Munich and Dark Crystal Malts take less of a back seat in this brew, providing a deep amber/red colour and a toffee malt sweetness to cushion the hop bite. Base hopping with Galaxy hop pellets (for bitterness) and late hopping with Tassie grown Southern Hallertau and Pride of Ringwood hop flowers (for aroma and flavour) gives Hop Thief a distinct floral and herbal aroma with piney/resinous notes and a snappy bitterness to finish (around 38 IBUs).
In the words of Chief Brewer Tony Jones: “Instead of using a hopback which runs hot wort over the hop flowers, we use an original process to infuse the hops by adding the hop flowers late in fermentation by circulating warm beer (20C) through a vessel we have affectionately dubbed the “Hopperator” – basically a stainless cylinder with a mesh cage insert which contains about 13-15kg of hop flowers. This results in less oxidation and loss of volatiles than in a hopback, and better extraction of aroma and flavour constituents than achieved through dry hopping.”
Naturally there’s no better way to taste such a hop driven style than fresh off tap at The Birthday Pub ...The Wheaty!
Kegs tapped from 12pm Tues 26th May On for as long as it lasts!

DRINK A LOCAL @ THE WHEATY - BAROSSA BREWING CO 'Greenock Dark Ale'

The Wheaty has dedicated one of its taps to the best South Australian brews from the best South Australian Microbreweries.
The Wheaty’s Local Micro Tap pours a handpicked Local Beer of the Month and punters have an opportunity to talk shop with the brewer on the 1st Wednesday of every month.
The next Local to grace our taps will be “Greenock Dark Ale” from The Barossa Brewing Company in Greenock followed by Lobethal Bierhaus (Lobethal), Brewboys (Regency) and The Steam Exchange (Goolwa – currently pouring). Located in the historic 1860s Wheat Store in Greenock, The Barossa Brewing Company has been brewing small batches of pure, hand crafted, traditionally brewed beers since 1998. Appropriately, Barossa beers are brewed in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516 (known as the Reinheitsgebot) and as such are made from only water, barley, malt, hops and yeast. Barossa Brewing Company’s beers are unpasteurised, unfiltered and are free from preservatives and additives. (www.barossabrewingcompany.com)
Greenock Dark Ale (4.4%ABV) is in the style of a full-bodied, robust Porter. In the words of Barossa’s brewer Darryl Trinne: “We use generous amounts of drum roasted barley malt and choc chit malt to produce the coffee and chocolate characters that balance with the mocha and ripe stone fruit aromas. Nottingham ale yeast is used to retain the true Porter style. Classic English style Fuggles Hops are used for bittering and subtle aroma (around 30 IBUs). Fermentation occurs at 23 degrees to create a distinctive fruity character. A great antidote to our long winter nights, Greenock Dark Ale is one gutsy brew but is remarkably easy to drink…”
Drink Greenock Dark Ale and Meet the Local Brewer from 6-8pm
