Stormtroopers of the Apocalypse is the splattastic trailer created by Texas moviemaking dude Stacy Davidson for the Robert Rodriguez / SXSW Grindhouse Trailer Contest, a feature of the SXSW 2007 Grindhouse 101 panel.
It was shot at the beginning of February over an extended weekend (1 night and 3 days), and edited in 3.5 days. The budget was under $500, most of which was spent on wardrobe, props and one gallon of stage blood.
My name is Stacy Davidson, and I'm a Houston, Texas stationed writer / director / cinematographer / editor / head floor sweeper who was inspired to get off his ass and start making movies in 2002 when I first read Robert Rodriguez' book Rebel Without a Crew. It was a blast for me to be involved in Robert's trailer challenge and I had the time of my life meeting the other creators at SXSW and indulging in a grindhouse feast that spanned from an outdoor park in Downtown Austin to the impressive 501 Theater, from dusk 'til roughly 2:00AM, and featured a slew of contest trailers, authentic 70's grindhouse trailers, and the notoriously insane grindhouse feature classics TORSO and ZOMBI. I capped off the weekend with a screening of Frank Miller's 300, quite possibly the greatest original "grindhouse" film of the decade, if not ever.
Thanks to every one of you that came out for all that (including my amazing girlfriend Laura, and Amy Rene, AKA "Profano Rosso" who came with her Husband and lasted through the entire night. She couldn't have been a better trooper! Wow!) It was especially amazing to meet all the trailer directors I had been talking to over the past few weeks like Christian (Tank), Thai (Maiden of Death), and Jason "Hobo With a Shotgun" Eisner who came down all the way from Nova Scotia and took 1st place! Hobo rules! And thanks for the shirt!!
When I'm not making grindhouse trailers for SXSW 2007 contests, I make and work on feature films. My other credits include Closet Space (Lighting Director, Visual Effects Supervisor), The Flesh Keeper (Cinematographer), and my feature directorial debut Necrophobia.
