About Me
SHARON KING; PRESS RELEASE, SUMMER 2009 ---With two albums under her belt Edinburgh based singer songwriter Sharon King is no stranger to the art of making the most of her craft. QUIDDITY and 24 HOURS both received rave reviews, showcasing the depth of her song writing and arranging skills. Her third release, RECKLESS ANGELS, brings all those skills into play and more. Time spent recently “tangled up in English Literature at Edinburgh University†has developed her sense of word play and she returns to the world of music at the absolute top of her game.
RECKLESS ANGELS reflects a spacious feel. The album is a statement of now, with a clear tangible sound which echo’s the wide open spaces of Texan blues, while being firmly planted in the culture of the modern Scottish music scene. There are elements of the countryesque, but this is not country. The music has an open road sound; there is space here, and clever song writing. King has the ability to sum up an experience in one line and make you see her vision of that moment. Her songs reflect her experience of life and places she has passed through, along with the people that have coloured her encounters. “…her voice is an alluring and fresh blend of country and folk styling’s which possess considerable reserves of strength…†(Rock n Reel) Supported by her hypnotic, rock steady acoustic guitar she is completely self contained. A spinner of tales, a confessor and wordsmith, she takes the art of the lyrical to a state of perfection.
RECKLESS ANGELS, as with her previous albums, draws in other musicians and there is a wealth of talent involved including; Vera van Heeringen; New Rope String Band – fiddle, mandolin and backing vocals; Inge Thomson; Karine Polwart Band, Harem Scarem – accordion. Kaela Rowan; Mouth Music – backing vocals. The album also has piano, cello, fretless bass and drums. All add a richness and variety to the overall sound while King’s production skills remain true to her vision of an open, spacey sound. The song is central.
King is a troubadour in the purest sense of the word. Her live performances are an engagement with the audience which is far too seldom experienced these days. This rapport reflects the integral part that music plays in her life and the importance of converting experience into song. Renowned for her relaxed intimacy at gigs she has a dry humour and wit which are both endearing and candid.
Sharon King performs solo or with the Nevernever Cowboys; an umbrella term for the myriad of musician she draws along with her in her ‘open road’ musical journey. RECKLESS ANGELS will be released on the 21st of October 2009 with a launch party at the Bongo Club in Edinburgh and will be followed by a ten day tour of the UK with Vera van Heeringen on fiddle, mandolin and backing vocals and Shelly Coyne on accordion and backing vocals. ---24 HOURS, 1999 - “This debut album is bursting with talent…†The Scotsman.
