About Me

Ask a salsa enthusiast today who their favorite salsa singer, or better yet sonero is and you will most likely hear Gilberto Santa Rosa or Marc Anthony mentioned. If you are lucky, you may get the name of one the great legends Hector Lavoe or Ismael Rivera.
This page was created to add one more name to that list of legends that has long been overlooked, underrated, and quite honestly forgotten.

This true Sonero’s name is Chamaco Ramirez.
If you recognize it at all, you may identify his name with his years of success as Tommy Olivencia’s lead singer. Just think of the classic “Trucutu” or “Plante Bandera” where Chamaco quite possibly gave his best. An avid salsa enthusiast might also highlight his work with the Alegre All Stars, Salsa All Stars, Kako, and of course his solo album. So why highlight the accomplishments of this sonero you ask? Simply stated, to enlighten any and everyone I can about a truly talented human being that deserves the recognition for his little known influence in the salsa world.
I invite you to stay seated, get comfortable, and enjoy this tribute page. As artists we are here to preserve our beautiful culture and the art of Afro-Cuban music and dance. It would be highly inaccurate for anyone else to do that without slightly mentioning Chamaco’s name. In the end, I want to you know him as I do. I hope you will feel his music and sing his lyrics freely and enthusiastically as many already do. After reading this page, singing those lyrics you may already know will hopefully have a different meaning and impact. I am not a family member of Chamaco’s.
I have never met his family nor have I seen any live footage of him. That is the beauty of what he accomplished. Through his music, his lyrics, and his voice, he converted others to feel his passion, pain, and just about every other feeling he displayed.
Ramirez’s influences span across the salsa world including singers such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Herman Olivera, and Michael Stuart. Any true sonero would surely recognize Chamaco’s ingenuity and improvisation gift. Listen to Chamaco and he’s in your face, coming from the streets and spitting verses like a modern day rapper. Like a freestyle rapper he was always ready to battle any other sonero who attempted to challenge, or better yet, not recognize his skills.
Chamaco sang what he felt; sometimes jumping off clave in order to place emphasis where he felt it needed to be.
Content with what you read? If so, scroll through the tracks that this sonero blessed with his musical genius. If not, read the blogs above and learn more about who many argue was salsa's greatest sonero.
