I start dig in end of 90's, when I hear something I like, it was very difficult to acquire the sources, the tracks. The information about the artists and titles was unavailable. About 6 years ago I bought a program (Fruity Loops) to teach myself how to mix beats, sample, and produce tracks. It was extremely difficult because all I had to go on was the music I heard. After a while, internet became available, so I was able to pay attention.I think a dj really needs to know exactly what he is doing. A lot of dj..s are just chopping samples. But I think a dj has to know about the history and sound of the style, the group, the performer. Each track must be personal, full of the expression of a particular thought, emotion which can be felt when the audience listens to it. It..s about having respect for the music, when I sample. That way, when I create a beat, a track, it reflects more than just a melody or a rhythm, but a composition and evolution of feeling. The groove is more than just the sample or the beat; it..s a reflection of the creator.
