She recently photographed Lily Allen, The Cribs, Head Automatica, The Secret Machines, The Brazilian Girls, The Frontier Brothers and many more (see the photos on www.janettebeckman.com - music)Born in London, Janette began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for The Face and Melody Maker, shooting bands like the Clash, the Specials, the Jam, the Undertones, Rip Rig & Panic, Spandau Balllet etc (see more photos at ww.janettebeckman.com/jb.rocks) and she photographed groundbreaking covers for the Police's first three albums.Her sharp eye for street style and pop culture led her to document two decades of youthful tribes: Beckman's powerful portraits celebrating this music and the attitude are collected for the first time in 'Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977-1982' PowerHouse Books 2005Moving to New York in 1982, she was instantly drawn to the underground Hip Hop scene. Her photographs of pioneers Afrika Bambaata, Run DMC, Salt'n'Pepa and Grandmaster Flash are collected in RAP: Portraits and Lyrics of a Generation of Black Rockers, St Martin's Press1991.Her work has recently been exhibited at: Morrison Hotel Gallery NYC, Isetan Tokyo, Collette Paris, The PowerHouse Gallery, The MK Gallery NYC, Paul Smith London, Tokyo, LA and New York, London's Proud Galleries, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Grand Central Station New York, Gallery 261, Young & Rubicam, Ogilvy & Mather, Govinda Gallery Washington DC.She is currently working on 'The Breaks' a new collection 1980's hiphop music and style images, due to be published in fall 2007 by PowerHouse Books.Some of my pictures:Joe Strummer - Milan - 1981The PoliceLily AllenMade in the UK:
