About Me

I am a jazz guitarist based in Durham, North Carolina. I play guitar in a variety of settings from solo to organ trio to big band. I mostly perform in North Carolina and elsewhere onthe East Coast. Though I have also performed in Russia and throughout Europe. Performances in Europe include five times at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Most of my gigging these days is duos and trios, and of course solo. As much as I love playing in small groups, I've really been having fun with playing a whole lot of solo guitarlately. I've posted a few solo guitar videos here for anyone to check out, I'll keep adding more as I have time.
As of early 2007 I have released ten self-produced CDs as a leader or co-leader. I've got two trio projects in the works for the coming year, stay tuned...
I am available for any kind of sideman or studio jazz work and, in addition to my established projects, I can assemble a variety of jazz ensembles to play at any public or privateevent anywhere in the world.
You can find many more videos, mp3s, and order my CDs at my website KevinVanSant.com

Influences: This would be a ridiculously long list, but some of my main early musical influences include Sonny Rollins, Clifford Brown, Ahmad Jamal, John Coltrane, Lester Young, Thelonious Monk, Donald Byrd, Cannonball Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Bobby Watson, Red Garland and guitarists Jim Hall, Barney Kessell, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Raney, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass........ among many others. Now I continue to be inspired by some of the younger players who are making great jazz music today, players such as Brad Mehldau, Bireli Lagrene, Peter Bernstein, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Brian Blade, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter... really, the list would be far too long.
