Adrift – to be free, receptive, spontaneous, transcending hierarchies that represent vitality, freshness and change. Open to enjoy every moment in every sound, every exhalation, every silence. This is the artistic perspective brought about by instrumental quartet À Deriva (“adriftâ€, in Portuguese). Not drawn to rigid aesthetic standards, the group looks at music as a free territory for improvisation, creativity and the dialog with different jazz and contemporary music styles.Discovering À Deriva and its sound is to surrender to a refreshing, innovative experience, plentiful with musicness.Creators of an innovative, free artistic proposition in Brazil’s current instrumental music scenario, À Deriva and its musicians have developed a particular style when playing, based on improvisation, on the non-hierarchical dialog among instruments and on the audacity of transcending aesthetic barriers.À Deriva has its own alchemy, in which can be found different jazz styles (mostly European segments), Brazilian and Latin music. Nonetheless, fitting closed aesthetic identities and patterns are not an issue for the group; instead, there is an effort to make frontiers between styles something subtle and diffuse, when not inexistent. The broad and rich musical experiences gathered by their components and rendered to the group (as all of them are also involved in other consistent projects), coupled with their repertoire’s authorial aspect and the absence of artistic restraints, are a natural call towards experimentation. Still, such experiments do not sound hermetic or cold, once they are tightly committed with expressivity in the creation of different colors and textures.
