MENSA - Northern New Jersey Mensa

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Northern New Jersey Mensa, with over 700 members, is one of American Mensa's 130+ local groups. While your local group is like your immediate family, members of Mensa have extended family not only throughout the US, but also throughout the world!
This page will list public events and activities in the Northern New Jersey group of American Mensa. However, you don't have to be in Northern New Jersey or Mensa to be our friend! For more information about Mensa, please click on the link below:
Excerpts from American Mensa and Mensa International :
With more than 50,000 members, American Mensa is the largest national Mensa operating under the auspices of Mensa International, Ltd. There are currently more than 100,000 members worldwide, and an estimated six million Americans are eligible for Mensa membership.
Members of American Mensa range in age from 4 to 100. They include engineers, homemakers, teachers, actors, athletes, students and CEOs, and they share one trait — high intelligence. To qualify for Mensa, they scored in the top 2 percent of the general population on an accepted standardized intelligence test.
What is Mensa?
Mensa was founded in England in 1946 by Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance Ware, a scientist and lawyer. They had the idea of forming a society for bright people, the only qualification for membership of which was a high IQ. The original aims were, as they are today, to create a society that is non-political and free from all racial or religious distinctions. The society welcomes people from every walk of life whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population, with the objective of enjoying each other's company and participating in a wide range of social and cultural activities.
What are Mensa's goals??
Mensa has three stated purposes: to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity, to encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence, and to promote stimulating intellectual and social opportunities for its members.
What kind of people are Members of Mensa?
There is simply no one prevailing characteristic of Mensa members other than high IQ. There are Mensans for whom Mensa provides a sense of family, and others for whom it is a casual social activity. There have been many marriages made in Mensa, but for many people, it is simply a stimulating opportunity for the mind. Most Mensans have a good sense of humor, and they like to talk. And, usually, they have a lot to say.
Mensans range in age from 4 to 94, but most are between 20 and 60. In education they range from preschoolers to high school dropouts to people with multiple doctorates. There are Mensans on welfare and Mensans who are millionaires. As far as occupations, the range is staggering. Mensa has professors and truck drivers, scientists and firefighters, computer programmers and farmers, artists, military people, musicians, laborers, police officers, glassblowers--the diverse list goes on and on. There are famous Mensans and prize-winning Mensans, but there are many whose names you wouldn't know.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Anyone and EVERYONE! We are always looking for new members and they come in all shapes and sizes. You'll never know if you qualify unless you TRY!

Please note that I am a member of Mensa trying to inform non-members of the organization. If you ask a question through this myspace page, you will get my personal experiences and/or opinions as a response. I do not speak for Mensa as a group as I feel that would be extremely arrogant and is completely unnecessary. You have to go to the American Mensa website for information on joining Mensa. You can't become a member by being on the friends list and there are people included in the friends list who aren't members of Mensa.

Also I cannot tell you if you, your boyfriend/girlfriend, kid, or whoever would be qualified to join Mensa. The only thing I can tell you is that if you think you might qualify, you should look into joining and follow the link above. If you are worried that you might not qualify, don't announce to the world that you are taking the admission test. If you don't create an expectation from others, you only have to worry about disappointing yourself which is a lot easier than disappointing the world.

And here's another doozy that I've come across often - being too smart to join Mensa. The thought is completely illogical! Mensa admits people who score in the top 2% of the general population on an accepted standardized intelligence test. This includes the smartest people in the world. If you think you are too smart for Mensa, regather you logical capabilites and have a little humility with your breakfast. And please read that with the utmost humor :)
