axel & stefan (two school mates) started producing hip hop and house instrumentals around 1989, heaviely influenced and inspired by coldcut, eric b & rakim, run dmc, simon harris, bomb the bass, m.a.r.r.s, todd terry project, doug e fresh, def jam rec., jungle brothers, stetsasonic, dj red alert, de la soul, swemix, stereo mc's and later gang starr & atcq.
after several collaborations in the local berlin underground hip-hop scene ( no solo , 3m'n nation , s.w.a.t posse ) they became the music-producing and composing part of the 2-mc's-and-a-dj crew a real dope thing from 1993-1995 being responsible for their jazzy and mellow vibe. during that period they met roskow kretschman who also was involved in the berlin hip hop scene. together they worked for the first delicious doughnuts (a legendary berlin jazz club)compilation and did some live gigs for the hitchhiker's project in 1994. after a real dope thing disbanded, they remained in the german hip hop scene araound M-ZEE records until 1996, produced tracks for an cora e album and made remixes for fettes brot, spax and mc renè.
in summer 1996 roskow introduced extended spirit to claas, alex and juergen who had just formed a dj-team called jazzanova. along with other dj's who where playing weekly @ the delicious doughnuts they where planning to produce and release a various artists compilation dedicaded to the club.
but as it took to much time to finish the project with all dj's in time, jazzanova decided to release the 3 tracks they've done with kosma(aka roskow) and extended spirit on its own. on 12/23 06 (one day before chrismas) the test pressings of the first j-nova ep arrived.
