Formed in February 2006, former Green Elephant members Keith and Brian teamed up with Love Freckle bass player Patrick to form Capitan Obvious, a jam rock trio. Following a local live acoustic set later that Spring, the band was approached by Thomas to add on as a guitarist. Thomas’s melodic guitar created a unique sound that is still evident in their music. Thomas’s move to Santa Cruz at the end of 2006 forced the band to revert back to a trio. Looking to start anew, the band decided on a name change. Drawing from their friend Peter’s boyhood hero Giant’s shortstop Johnny LeMaster, the name was decided. It was soon realized there was too much missing to continue as a trio. The search was on for the right guitarist. Mat of Chicago based Pulling Light joined the band in February 2007. Mat’s new wave/rock guitar and no-wave vocals, mixed with the rock rhythm, driving keyboard, and vocal harmonies have created a unique sound the band refers to as practice rock.
