Renowned for her pure, powerful songwriting and clear voice, Beth Nielsen Chapman has become one of the most distinctive portrayers of resilience and human vulnerability with an astoundingly diverse and extensive array of songwriting credits. She has penned hits and written tunes for some very prominent artists who’s styles span country, pop, folk, blues and jazz, such as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, Andy Bey, and Ute Lempter, including the Grammy-nominated, ground breaking smash for Faith Hill’s “This Kissâ€, (Chapman/Roboff/Lerner). Chapman’s songs have been featured on ER, Melrose Place and Dawson’s Creek, and her movie credits include “The Prince of Egypt†“Calendar Girlsâ€, “Message In A Bottleâ€, “The Rookieâ€, “Where The Heart Is†and “Practical Magicâ€.
The middle child of five in a military family, Chapman moved six times before she reached adolescence. Exposed to many cultural and musical influences, Chapman developed her love of great songwriting through Gershwin and Cole Porter, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, Motown, Ella, and many more, releasing seven albums of her own. She opened her heart to the world with the groundbreaking “Sand and Waterâ€, written and recorded following the death of her husband from cancer in 1994. Chapman’s public response to her private tragedy, a musical journey for healing through grief, inspired Elton John to perform the album’s title track, in tribute to Princess Diana, on his 1997 US tour.
Her subsequent release, “Deeper Still†(to which John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and John Hiatt, contributed background vocals), came out in 1999, and was voted "Album of The Year" by BBC2's Terry Wogan. “Deeper Still†was completed just as Beth was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. A year later, following successful treatment, Beth embarked on a promotional tour, sharing her experience and encouraging women to be vigilant with their health.
In the fall of 2004, Chapman astonished fans with Hymns, a collection of centuries-old Latin liturgical pieces. One of her most popular releases to date, “Hymnsâ€, following an interview on NPR’s “All Things Considered†shot up to 3 on Amazon.com and garnered a deluge of emails and letters.
Chapman’s most recent album, “Lookâ€, release in June of 2005, presents this eclectic songwriter at her heartfelt best. Co-produced with Peter Collins, “Look†explores the full scope of Chapman’s take on life and love with some of her best songs yet, already spawning two hits in the UK, where it was released on Sanctuary Records.
Throughout her career, Beth has been in demand as a teacher of workshops on creativity, songwriting, grief, and healing through art. The combination of her life experience and her guided tours through the unconscious provide a unique, inspiring approach to the creative process.
