Sealth
Sealth, based out of Seattle Washington, is blending a potentially dangerous cocktail made of equal parts hometown grunge and classic rock with a heavy dose of hairspray. Combining musical influences ranging from Poison to Pearl Jam and Yes to Neil Young, Sealth can at one moment be seen in the middle of a choreographed “dance move†then be heard wailing an angsty shriek just before exploding into an epic blues-inspired guitar solo the next. Sealth is truly a potent mixture of grunge with a heavy dose of hairspray.
Reconciling such diverse influences into one cohesive sound has taken a long time for band founder Dace Anderson. Starting with a metal band in the 90s, going fully acoustic by the end of the decade then switching to classic rock and blues in the early part of this century, Anderson’s road has been winding and narrow until now. After years of searching, he’s finally found the musicians that can put all of those styles into one without compromise and without fail.
And to think those players were right under his nose most of that time...
The inspired and unique vision conceived by music school founder Anderson to use his most highly proficient and affable students as backup for his own songs took on a life of its own quickly after forming Sealth at his music school about 20 miles SE of Seattle in 2007. Originally meant to be a showcase band for the bands taught at the school, it quickly became clear that this group was not so much a collective of students and their mentor but a highly creative and entertaining group of friends all learning from each other and inspiring each other to the point of synergetic collusion.
Although Sealth is no longer working exclusively as a teaching band, it can still teach a thing or two about professionalism, songwriting quality, entertainment value, and especially about establishing yourself as a professional musician whether you make it to MTV or not. All four members of Sealth are currently professional musicians and educators.
Knowing that not making it to the top of the charts will not end their musical careers, Sealth creates with total musical freedom and without fear, blending their influences together seamlessly to produce a professional musical product both on record and live on stage.
Sealth, a Brief History of:
Sealth commenced at Rock School in Maple Valley on a Tuesday.
Sealth consists of one (1) teacher and three (3) teenaged phenoms all learning from each other.
Sealth has the same chemistry as a World Series winning baseball team; a perfect mix of experience and wisdom and wide eyes and fire.
Original songs by Sealth are largely inspired by youth and honed to finely crafted perfection by experienced artisans.
Sealth is not a rock band. We are a lifestyle and an empire.
1. El Valentino—Segue
Get your cowbell and trumpet fix here. As a spicy intro for the rest of "Vaguely Familiar", El Valentino adds some grunge to a latin theme and shows Sealth has a sound all their own.
2. The Light
Heavenly backup vocals accent this song that is, while upbeat, reflective about life and that light at the end of the tunnel. A straight ahead, fairly modern sounding rocker. Short and to the point. A jumble of nostalgia and cynicism. Perfect.
3. Run All Night
An acoustic chord driven powerhouse, Run All Night chugs along at the speed of a truck driver on cheap beer, but without the nasty belches. Filled with an inexplicable mix of hope for something better and the slow grind of the present, it will fill you with longing though you won’t know why.
4. Nothing In Our Way
bum bum bum bum WOOOO! Incorrigible in its hopefullness, Nothing In Our Way leaves you feeling anything impossible. The uplifting “woo†’s and occasional acapella by Dace will bring you right out of any bad day.
5. Porch Song
The title says it. Laid back jazzy song about sitting, playing, and drinking on the porch. Groovy baby. Bust out your drink of choice and a pair of nice big shades for this song and feel the chill as you wish you had a porch swing on which to ruminate.
6. Punk Rock Party
A fast and upbeat party song featuring Arielle Young on vocals. Lively and uncomplicated, this song plays off of the generic punk style, complete with background party sounds. This is what you should listen to if you’re feeling carefree and ready to not remember what happened when it’s tomorrow morning.
7. Waiting For You
Here we give tribute to our bass player’s CD collection. On it we pay homage to the 80’s with a startling barrage of clichés and Aqua Net induced riffery. This love song can’t be a free relationship counselor but if you want to be reminded about love at its purest, yet somehow also its dirtiest, give this song a listen
8. Oh Well
Nostalgia extracted and put in song form. Soulful and hopeful describe this song and its gaze shifting from looking back at the times of beer and pizza to forward at the times where you still eat pizza and drink beer but have to pretend you’re going to work it off in the morning.
9. If I Knew
An electric continuation of “Oh Well†with 4 part harmony and funky bass line.
10. Vaguely Familiar
Arielle says this song is “early 90’s awesome.†Dace says it’s hard to sing when he feels he’s moved on. The guitar solo at the beginning is one of the best of recent times and the guitar solo at the end might be the best guitar solo of all times.
11. For You
A ukulele-driven tour de force about the more pure and innocent aspects of love.
