Dana Myzer has been a professional drummer for over twenty years. After years of paying dues in bar bands across the midwest of the United States, playing everywhere from County fairs to Holiday Inns to punk bars to strip joints, he moved to Austin, Texas in the early nineties and quickly became immersed in that city’s vibrant music scene doing sessions and live gigs.
He joined Austin roots-rock heroes the Loose Diamonds and played drums and sang background vocals on the band’s New Location album which Stereo Review magazine called “exhilaratingâ€. The band toured relentlessly playing Europe several times and the U.S. practically non-stop. In addition to the Loose Diamonds, Dana recorded and/or played with Austin musicians such as Alejandro Escovedo, Michael Hall, and Beaver Nelson, to name a few.
In 1995 Dana left the Loose Diamonds to join Cotton Mather and the band immediately toured Japan where there was immense underground support. After the tour, Kontiki was recorded and released in 1997 to rave reviews in the U.S.
In 1998 Dana did a stint as touring drummer for Mary Cutrufello, whose album When The Night Is Through was released on Mercury Records. That tour included appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid, and Willie’s annual 4th.of July Picnic. Dana also sang background vocals on much of the record.
Later in the year he returned to Cotton Mather in time for the UK/European release of Kontiki which saw first single She’s Only Cool become single of the week on BBC Radio. Tours followed (five UK/European tours in one year!), and ecstatic reviews poured in from publications all over the UK and Europe including NME, Mojo, Q (“Paul McCartney should be losing sleep over this recordâ€), German Rolling Stone, and The Irish Times, among many, many others.
Oasis’ Liam and Noel Gallagher became fans of the band with Noel saying of Kontiki …“if this isn’t the best record of the last 10 years, I don’t know what isâ€. Noel asked Cotton Mather to support Oasis at several shows on their 2000 European tour.
The band released their next record The Big Picture in 2001 and again headed to Europe to tour. Great press poured in once more for the record and live show with The Guardian’s Beth Clarke, after seeing a London show, calling Dana “…the true star of the show…whose drums grab you and refuse to let you goâ€. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band guitarist Miami Steve Van Zandt called Dana “…part of one of the best rhythm sections in the businessâ€.
After years of recording and touring, Cotton Mather returned to Austin in 2002 and began an indefinite hiatus. Dana quickly got to work however, doing numerous sessions and live dates with different artists including legendary Small Faces/Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, Bill Lloyd (Foster & Lloyd), country favourite Trish Murphy and pop songwriter Ron Flynt (20-20), among others.
In 2005 Dana moved to London and is doing sessions and live dates with various artists.
Current projects include a new record from the band Stockton that features Whit Williams (Cotton Mather) and Ron Flynt (20-20, Ron Flynt & The Bluehearts).
